Topic Dog Boards / General / To neuter or not. ?
- By codysholasmum [ie] Date 30.05.15 09:22 UTC
I have two male Gsd,s one 12 years old ,one 4 years old both intact. Now as family separation have had to take in a 5 year old intact Husky.
My problem is the two youngest are not happy with each other.Any growling from either will set them off.
My old boy is fine ,will not get involved at all.
Any help on if any to neuter please, as living with one caged while one is free or one in garden while one in house is a tad stressful..
Thanks in advance......xx

Have you seen Champdogs Blog: The Pros and Cons of Neutering

Rather than put either of your dogs through what is still surgery, however 'simple', I think you have to decide whether the disruption caused by taking in this extra male, is worth doing, or whether for the sake of everybody, it might be better to contact Husky Rescue who may well be able to offer a good home for this boy so peace returns to your household.

Castration only prevents unwanted litters.   This is the ONLY guarantee.   Clearly you can't carry on having to crate one etc.

I had to give in when one I'd kept to show, started challenging his uncle by the time he reached around 2 years.  I tried my best to get him to settle down again but he wasn't having it so in the end, I found him a super home and peace was restored to our small pack.   I hated doing it because once we kept a puppy from our litters, they stayed to the end of their days.   This was just one too many!

There is no guarantee that neutering will change anything, so if it was me and my dogs, I would opt for the Suprelorin implant to see how the dog/s would react if one or more were neutered. It takes about 6 weeks to have an effect and then lasts for around 6 months. I did this with one of mine to make sure neutering did NOT change him for the worse.

Have to agree with the others.  Neutering may help, it may make things much worse, it may make no difference at all.  Suprelorin would be a good idea I think to see what effect it might have but ultimately, these two dogs may just not like each other and never get on - or with time they could get used to each other.

The best thing you can do that you can do immediately is make every interaction they have (and that includes just seeing each other from afar or even ignoring each other) is a good experience - do not tell them off for growling, it is communication, not aggression and praise/reward every single good thing you see.  If being around each other makes biscuits rain from the sky then at the very least,  you can reduce the chances of them scrapping, if not increase the chances of them learning to get along in the long run.
