I have just had one of my puppy buyers on the phone saying she can't have the puppy because they have lots of yew trees in their garden and are concerned about the pup in the garden.  They want to return the puppy.
I am really annoyed because they should have checked this before having the puppy!
I've said that under these circumstances I cannot offer a refund because it is not a health issue with the pup (she is a lovely example of her breed).  They also travelled quite a distance to collect her.
I've said I will find a new home for the pup quite happily but I think with the distance involved they will try to rehome her locally for them.
Has anyone else had an experience like this?
I cannot understand why they did not check on this before even looking for a puppy!  They had obviously done their research before contacting me and had had a dog before (who died about 6 months ago) but apparently this is a new house.

Hi Kellywillow, if I were  breeder in this situation, I would be relieved that the puppy buyer had come back to me. I would give the refund and thank them profusely for getting in touch. You see, I would rather be the one to find another suitable home for my puppy than lose touch and not know where it was. :)

I'm with nursey -just return the money, get the pup back ASAP, and find a home you are happy with. Otherwise chances are you will never know what happens to it.

You are both absolutely right.  I'm offering a full refund.  I couldn't bear the thought of not knowing what had become of her.  One to chalk up to experience!

I really hope you find a forever home for your puppy. It must be very unsettling for the puppy to be taken to new home then handed back! I wonder if the "Yew Trees" being used as an excuse as maybe a new puppy proving to be hard work!? It had been ten years since I'd had a puppy and I'd forgotten the hard work involved! I would have thought the trees would have been checked before.
Better you finding the new home than the owners palming puppy off on anyone.

I drove many miles to collect one of my pups when the puppy buyer turned out to be unsuitable.  I handed over the full puppy price in cash and couldn't wait to get my girl in the car.  She could have been passed from pillar to post and used as a breeding machine.  What about the dogs sold on, or offered free to good home?  And get taken to be used as bait in dog fights.  A responsible breeder accepts responsibility for any pup they breed, for that dogs lifetime.

Update on the puppy:  they brought her back the same day.  She arrived back at 7pm after a 5 hour drive, had slept all the way back, bounced back into my house and jumped on her brother (who is leaving for his new home this weekend) and started playing!  I had expected a rather subdued puppy but she was obviously well looked after in the 2 days she spent with them.  I thanked them for bringing her all the way back and they were very apologetic.  I suspect the reality of a puppy in the house made them think again even though when I 'vetted' them they had obviously done their research.  Apparently this is a new house (they had had a dog until he died 6 months ago, so were experienced dog owners). 
The puppy seems none the worse for 2 long journeys in 3 days and it is as if she was never away.  Playing with her brother, mother and our 2 other dogs, eating well and bright eyed.
Luckily I had an email from someone that afternoon asking if I knew any puppies available.  She had come with a friend to pick up a puppy from me last week and was looking for one.  To cut a long story short, she is an ideal puppy owner, came to look at the wee girl the next evening and is taking her home at the end of the week (I want to keep this puppy a few more days to make absolutely sure she is fine - another change of environment in a couple of days would not be good, I think).  The new owner has a holiday booked in June for week but I'm more than happy to have the pup back for that week as I'm sure she will give the girl a lovely home.  She (the pup) will see two of her brothers regularly as they will all be in the same puppy class!
So all's well that ends well. Phew!  Been a topsy-turvy few days!

Fantastic news! Glad it worked out for you both It's ok re doing research, enquiries etc but no one can advise of the "hard work involved in early puppy months" They did the right and decent thing by bringing her back.

Best possible outcome. I'm over the moon that this episode has ended so well. Brilliant.
