What factors help you decide to give your bitch the CHV? I didn't use it with my other bitch's litter - it was her first and stud dog's second litter. But am wondering if I should use it this time. It's her first litter and the young stud has not been used extensively yet, but am unsure whether I should or not. Would welcome anyone's thoughts on the matter.

My breed are notorious for missing or absorbing litters so I wanted to cover all bases. At least I could say that I'd done everything in my power to prevent her missing

I would use it no matter what the circumstances--the positives far outweigh the cost or risk. I had my maiden bitch vaccinated and if I remember correctly my vet charged £54 per vaccination (this was late last year, the litter whas born in November 2014).
If you had ever lost a litter to this, you would use it routinely as that is what happened to me.
In my case it was the stud's first mating although my bitch had a litter before.

Thanks for all the replies and the link. My vet has suggested it although I don't know anyone who has used it routinely so it is good to get other opinions.

All the best with the mating, JenP, I know we often hear about vets "loading" bills, but this is a piece of advice I wish every vet gave. Good on your vet for mentioning it.

Wound never contemplate breeding without using it

I agree with JAY15 I had never heard of it before it happened to my bitch and it was a totally devestating time . Have used the vaccine ever since and had successful litters.
It is reassuring to have that comfort at least while pregnant. There are enough other possibilities to worry about IMO

We too lost a litter to CHV a few years ago, something I will never ever be able to forget. For us it's quite simple we don't breed unless we vaccinate.
