Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Phantom or Pregnant after mismate jab?
- By PeediePie [gb] Date 21.04.15 16:44 UTC
Hello Everyone,

I am driving myself crazy with what ifs and although I am 99% sure my bitch is fine I am worried.....

My bitch had an accidental mating on the in February after calling vet he told us to bring her in after her heat for two injections 24 hours apart which we did 10 - 11th March.

Fast forward to the 22nd March she started bleeding again only not much and dark brown, was told she would come back in heat early didn't think it would be so early sent my male to in laws so no chances for anything to happen. this heat was much shorter than the last one, I came to conclusion either was results of jab (abortion) or short broken heat, she showed no signs of discomfort.

Everything seemed fine after this bitch acting normal, eating normal no problems. however she seemed a bit chunky and teats where firmer, I was so worried incase injection didnt work, she is two young and not had all health tests. so I took her for a scan, no puppies where seen or felt so I have been worry free......

Until yesterday she went for a pee and when she came in she had a browny snot like mucous hanging from her vulva, now I have wiped her bits all day and nothing else has come out so now I am a bit worried it was a mucous plug? she keeps licking.

I think maybe she could be coming back in heat since her last one was so short, but the thing is her due date would be 24th April if original mating was successful so around the right time to lose her plug.

I am going to hold out for anymore discharge/ signs of discomfort/ not eating before we go back to vet.

Has anyone any experience of bitch having a puppy or phantom after mismate jab?

She has not got fat or wide her stomach only looks full and firm when she is sitting and her teats are full but not huge or hanging, I can't feel any puppies.

I did treat her with Bravecto and Milbemax two days after the injection?

Thanks in advance

P.S she is a slim build large breed so would be hard to miss if she was pregnant... I think.

Do you know if the mismate jab was Alizin (newest and most effective but normally give when the season finishes in two jabs).  It clears out the uterus.

The older drug used was Delvesteron which disrupt the cycle and basically start things over.  I have know single puppies born after this jab.

Sounds like it was Alizin, which is very effective, but next season can be early.

Quote: "Rare cases of lack of efficacy (>0.01 % to < 0.1%) have been reported as part of the pharmacovigilance survey. To reduce the possibility of lack of expected efficacy, avoid the use of Alizin until after the end of oestrus and avoid new mating before the end of oestrus."

Thank you Brainless, I am almost 100% sure it was Alizin, it was a really thick yellow liquid, that was injected 24 hours apart, after her heat, I will have to call tomorrow to confirm this.

Yep it will have been alizin.

Yup!  I have a Border Collie here who was born after the Delvesteron jab.  He was the only pup.

We had two pups born after jag......one very small girl who only lasted 12 hours and a very healthy big boy .......

Yep, that's what I have heard with Delvesteron, but not heard of Alizin failing.

the friend I had whose bitch was given Delvesteron had 1 live pup also had a dead one with it's insides out.

I have no first-hand knowledge of this BUT I do know that these shots don't always work.  And that once given, the bitch will 'come back into season'.   Even if intentionally mated, bitches still go the the full 21 days of that season.

If she was mine, rather than hanging around wondering, I'd have her straight to my vet for x-ray and go from there.   This nasty discharge would bother me - pyo?   The dog involved could well have been carrying some kind of infection.

That is what the Delvesteron did, but now the newer Alizin works differently and is much more effective.

Thank you all for your advise.

She is acting very much herself eating, playing and no more discharge, we are off to the vets tomorrow just to be on safe side but he said to call if any more discharge, off her food, sick or lethargic.

Fingers crossed everything is fine.

Hi just to let you all know, she went to the vet and was fine on Monday. so we went home discharge started up again yesterday had her scanned is open pyometra.

She is in the early stage and is being treated with Alizin and antibiotics, she had 1st injection of alizin and an injection of AB yesterday and passed a lot of fluid.

went back to vets earlier for 2nd Alizin jab and collected  AB tablets.

We are due back on Friday for a scan to see if it has cleared up then we will book routine spay before next heat, if hasn't cleared or she goes off colour we will have to have emergency hysterectomy.

At the moment she is fine in herself a bit grumpy after trip to vets but we'll, eating and playing.

I am just so thankful we spotted the discharge as she had no other signs so could of left it too late.

If you had intended to breed from her then you'd need to mate her on the next season, and have her spayed after.

An Open Pyometra isn't as bad as a closed one, which is why Alizin/prostaglandin therapy is  being used.

Thank you Brainless, scan revealed Alizin treatment was successful just had last jab of it yesterday and ten more days of antibiotics to completely eliminate any other yucky stuff that.might be left.
