Looking for some advice I have a 16 day old puppy from my litter of 10, they are 3/4 Weimaraner 1/4 GSP  he's is and always has been the smallest of the litter  we just assumed he was little as he came  from such a large litter. Any way they were all vet checked at 3 days with no problems. But I have noticed he's not gaining anything like the others he was 320g at birth others all 430-500g, he's now only 535g others all between 1100-1500g. Then he developed some puss like little spots on his tummy area so I took him back to the vets where she told me that was a bacterial infection, but she also thought he had this condition he is also doing yellow coloured poo's, which does generally indicate liver issues

We are gutted if this is the case as I hear prognosis for dogs being diagnosed so young isn't good?

He's a lively little thing eats well and his coat looks good, he's on a 10 day antibiotic course and they have just finished their 1st worming course.

Does anyone have any cheerful stories of this condition?

I had one like that that was put to sleep at 12 days he fitted and stopped breathing on two occasions and from being the largest was the smallest by then.

I won't rear a puppy that will not have a normal life.

If he definitely has liver issues at 16 days, I would let him go. Have you started on solid food though? Have you supplemented him with bottle feeds as the smallest? My own pups are 13 and 14 days today (born over 2 days), I have 12, and I shall start solid food tomorrow both to help mum out and give the smaller ones a proper chance to catch up.

Putting him to sleep is not an option at the moment as he is full of beans and eating well, if he was in the corner and not feeding etc then I would think differently.
Yes I am planning on starting weaning the others asap, He has ben having separate feeds also. I am not supplementing by bottle as was told he needs as much of his mums antibodies as possible at the moment, also to keep him on her as long as possible.

Liver issues have not been confirmed as he is too young, the test for liver shunt is apparently at 14 weeks, I've heard that surgery can be completely successful, as I said were not prepared to give up on him just yet!

I was just looking for some happy stories

14 weeks? Can't see that being right as Wolfhound pups are tested before they leave which is 8 weeks.
Think you might need to ask again for a liver shunt test or ask another vet.

The breeder of my deerhound tested at twelve weeks for shunt and does that with subsequent litters. I had a wee golden retriever pup who was born with his eyes open but in a diamond shape. He'd fed well for the first day although his fur stuck up, on day two he started fitting after feeding, I took him to the vet who sent him on his way to the rainbow bridge, he had liver shunt, that was a golden retriever

That is like the pup I had, but in my case he was a healthy weight (the largest) fed well, but fitted on day four, and again at a week, at 12 days he was PTS when he did it again and had failed to gain weight for several days.

He's 3 weeks today still dinky but is gaining, and eats really well, he's had a skin infection also which I think hasn't helped. No evidence of him fitting tho
