This is an amazing story which demonstrates the importance of microchipping your dog.
"Jasper is a Whippet who was brought into our Hurstpierpoint Clinic on Thursday 12th March after he had been found wandering nearby by a member of the public. Rhian, one of our vets, checked him over and scanned him for a microchip and it was discovered that he was registered to an address in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire and had been reported missing/stolen in September 2014. In the meantime Jasper had been sold to a woman who had looked after him for the last 3 months.
Equally had he been wearing a collar with tag or had an ear tattoo he could have been reunited, the important thing is for the information to be up to date.
Mine have all three, so hopefully one will always work

Maybe he had a collar on when he was >reported missing/stolen in September 2014. The joy is that his owner got him back and that means that there is hope for others whom have had dogs stolen or are missing.
A friend of mine had a dog (Papillon) stolen and he was returned ONE YEAR later and that was entirely due to his microchip. He'd been sold several times and eventually ended up sick at the vet (with his latest owner who had just bought him) who scanned him and found he'd been reported as stolen. A collar and disc would have been no use at all there.
