Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Think my girl has lost her puppies

Got a vet appointment at 4.45 for a scan. She is on day 47. On day 40 she had a bit of a bust up with one of my other girls, nothing too serious, no broken skin, just a lot of noise and teeth. Since then I have kept her separate. She is no longer gaining weight and in fact looks to have lost weight. Is day 40 too late to absorb as she has not aborted them?

re you sure she has lost weight not just changed shape? They do tend to drop lower in the later stages and if you look down on them from above some of mine didn't even look in whelp...it was all underneath.

How did you get on with the scan?

I believe most reabsorbing takes place around week 5.   One of ours looked well in whelp (I don't do scans, preferring to wait) by that time into her pregnancy but simply didn't grow any bigger.   She had one puppy so at least we did have one!!   That bitch only had 2 in her first litter, so she wasn't exactly a prolific bitch which surprised me as of the two litter sisters we'd kept, she always looked like the btter brood bitch prospect.   Her prima donna sister, who took her Championship, always overshadowing her sister in the ring, had 9 puppies although due to veterinary incompetence (he refused to do a C.Section) - long story, 5 of the 9 were lost on delivery.   Healthy puppies, just lost because of the delayed 'Section.

ps     There was no sign of any reabsorbing having taken place, when she was opened up to deliver the singleton puppy and our vet was doubtful that had happened.

Good news is Maggie is still pregnant with at least 3 puppies, she had 6 with last litter (2 years ago) Bad news....Phoebe is not....gutted, I was so sure, last litter 18 months ago. Hey ho, this is breeding for you.
