I AM GOING TO BUY A CAIRN TERRIER PUPPY THIS WEEKEND, WE ARE GOING TO THE BREEDER, IF I DON,T GET OFFERED REGISTRATION PAPERS DOES IT MEAN THAT IT IS NOT A GENUINE DOG, AM A BIT CONFUSED, PLEASE HELP, ALSO WHAT IS THE NORMAL PRICE RANGE I AM EXPECTED TO PAY.
I AM GOING TO GET FEEDING INFORMATION AND A 16 WEEK HEALTH COVER, NO MENTION OF REGISTRATION PAPERS.
DON,T WANT TO USE THE DOG FOR BREEDING OR SHOWS, IT WILL BE A MUCH LOVED FAMILY PET.

If you don't want to use the dog for breeding or showing then whether it is registered or not is not really an issue. However, it could be that the dog may not be a pure bred Cairn but just looks like one. This wont make it any less of a valuable pet and companion but it is best to ask the breeder exactly why they aren't registered and if you are not happy with the reply then pull out of the sale.
Good luck.

from research I have done, if you are offered 16 weeks insurance then its highly likely your puppy will NOT be registered with the KC. This tends to be something you get from the 'alternative' registries, which are basically a rip off.

Sam why is this a rip off?

with alternative registrations you are paying top price for a dog with a registration paper that is of no value.Any one can make a list of imaginary dogs names and use them as the pedigree of their dog with these alternative regs.
I have seen many dogs with these papers and most are very poor breed specimans and many have had health issues. You need to ask why are these pedigree dogs not registered with the KC?Few may have a genuine reason but many have not.
If you want a pedigree dog that looks like the pictures you see of them go to a respectable breeder.JMHO

Thank you Archer, you pretty much said what I wanted to, plus of course the fact that you waste £6 on one of these registries that gives you nothing but a bit of paper. You cannot enter shows, trials etc and you cannot register any progeny (except with another dodgy registry of course!). you could make up any list of names and say its a well bred puddlehound & they would register it for you. I fail to see the point.

Sam I offer 16 weeks insurance and 6 weeks with our dogs
i feel the 6 weeks is better but i do think 16 weeks is better than nothing
All mine are kc reg and well bred so its not fair to say that if you were offered 16 weeks insurance you would doubt on the kc papers

carolyn I know it is getting late but a bit confused what you mean - 6 weeks is better than 16 weeks? Probably reading it all wrong?
gina :p

Hi Gina
No its not you i have just re read what i wrote and to me it makes sense :) but not to anyone else.
I offer 2 lots of puppy insurance
1 is for 6 weeks and is with petplan who i personally think are the best for the puppy insurance
the other insurance is for 16 weeks but they arent very good at paying out but at lease the pup is covered for 16 weeks ...better than nothing..but only just
BUT I would rather they go with both than with nothing.

who insures for 16 weeks----because some just go with petplan for 6 weeks and transfer to kc for the next 6, so get 12 in total,

E & L insure for 16 weeks, but when they sent me all the literature, it said that I had to give them the new owners' credit card details so that they could take the annual premium, THEN they would give 16 weeks free insurance! I'm certainly not prepared to ask my puppy owners for their credit card details plus I know of people who've had trouble getting Veterinary fees paid. One family who'd lost their dog were told that the value of the dog was reduced because he was castrated and couldn't be used at stud- he was a family pet! They then reduced the value again because of his age. They paid out peanuts and only then after a fight. I stick with Petplan as I have done for years!

If you are a member of the Dog Breeders Association, they usually send out a load of bumpf about insurance etc. and this is for 16 weeks cover. I am a member and I KC register my pups but I wouldn't promote 16 weeks insurance as like the E & L insurance scheme mentioned above, they want you to take new owners credit card details etc... I send out Pet Plan cover notes as they have a brilliant Breeder Bonus scheme too.

Carolyn,
in that case I am sorry...I have only ever come across breeders offering 16 weeks when they are involved with the PLR etc. I hope I haven't caused you any embarassment.
Having said that, in my vets newsletter this month they suggest that anyone who is using E&L changes to another company as they have such a bad record for non payment of claims!!!

Hi Sam
You have nothing to apoligise about you silly bug :)
You have caused me no embarassment at all
The only reason i activate the 2 is some owners forget to renew the insurance
for the pup and i know that the 16 weeks company (E&L) do pester new owners
I tell them all to cancel it after 15 weeks but they do also put the pup on a lost dog register.
IMO (covering myself :) ) E and L are known for not paying out and i wouldnt insure my dogs with them.
