I am looking into microchipping my upcoming litter as is required under the Assured Breeder scheme but getting confused as to the best way to do this.

As I understand it the pups are registered to me ,the breeder, then the new owner has to pay £16 to change of ownership. If the new owner doesn't change the details I am responsible if that pup strays, bites or causes an accident. I have several of my pups still registered in my name where the new owners haven't changed their reg details so I expect some owners may not pay to change microchip details either.

Iknow the new law doesn't come in until next year for pups being registered in breeders name so do any of you have them chipped and leave the forms blank if I am allowed to register straight to new owners.......jeez,what a palava!!

The whole point of litters having to be chipped is that they are registered to the breeder.

You don't need to get the chipped for ABS you can get them tattooed with the NDTR  http://www.dog-register.co.uk/ and suggest new owners get them chipped during vaccinations, that way you will be sure that there will be records with your details (NDTR) and the new owners (chip).  I have found over the years only around half of new owners transfer the registrations with the kennel club.

Even though it has been stated they won't be heavy on enforcing the new law when it comes in the offence will be with the new owner for not transferring the details, same as if you don't inform DVLA of change of address for your driving license or car.

Thanks Brainless,

Are the tattoos easy to id each pup yourself....I mean so I can tell what paperwork goes with each pup when they leave?

That's not correct -microchipping alone does not prove ownership or liability, just like KC registration does not. When the law changes next year then you must register the chips into the new owners' names, at the moment you don't. I choose to do so however, I register them online as soon as ecah pup has left for its new home -but then again I chip them myself. If you get a chipper to come to your house and do it for you they may be able to leave you the forms to post off once you know whose details should go on them but there are different prices for microchipping and some are sold as for online registration ONLY, in which case only the person who chipped them can log in online and register them.

I've always been able to, but as mine are sometimes tattooed just before they go, and the ink may still be all over the ear (it should be allowed to flake off and not cleaned off) my pups all wear a strand of wool from birth of different colours for ID and these are not removed until they go.

I think you will find Marianne that you will be required to register the chips into your name and the new owner will have to transfer them.

"Anyone breeding dogs will be responsible for microchipping their puppies before they sell or give them to new keepers. All imported dogs will need to have a microchip. Breeders will be required to register their own details and these will be recorded against the microchip for the life of the dog."

Thanks Goldmali,

So if I brought my own scanner could I check puppy matched paperwork that way for ID purposes. Have tried collars in the past but never again due to pups nearly throttling each other! Just want to work out best way to ensure puppy and right paperwork go together having an all black no markings litter.

You'd certainly want your own scanner if your going to be chipping litters.

I am going to have to bite the bullet and get hubby trained up to chip.

My previous 2 litters I had chipped into my name and signed them over to the new owners at time of purchase. For some reason (God knows why now) I decided to have my last litter chipped and paperwork made out to the new owners at the same time.

In theory this should have been straight forward but just after having them chipped I realised that the pup I had wanted to keep from birth had developed a very slight mouth fault, enough to make me decide I couldn't keep her for breeding. There was one dog pup that I had also had my eye on but had decided he was earmarked for one of my buyers, so was registered under their name (experienced breed owners, happy to abide by my decision as to which pup was theirs), I also had one boy puppy not spoken for (dog with a tail, pet quality) so registered in my name. Another buyer turns up to collect their puppy (dog without a tail) saw the pup still available with tail and decided they'd rather have him!! This then left the pup earmarked for them available for experienced owners and the dog pup then available for me, are you keeping up?? Please bear in mind I was recovering from a very badly broken ankle during the 8 weeks since pups had been born and visits etc by puppy owners were not the same as my other litters. I would normally have expected everyone to have visited at least once from 4 weeks old.

All this meant that an exchange of microchip paperwork had to be done by all 3 of us once the proper papers arrived at each address, never again!! Any future litters will be registered in my name, law or no law, and buyers will have to pay to have it changed into their names.

This is why I never register a chip until the puppy has left with the new owners.

I'm really not with it this weekend, am I! I should be the one called Brainless LOL. Yes you're right -but it doesn't say the OWNERS have to transfer the chip (at least I haven't spotted it LOL) so my thinking is that I will simply pay out to do it myself at time of sale as that way I will KNOW it has been done.

It's also great that the breeder's details will stay with the dog's microchip info for life from next year!

So,if I have understood this right, the breeder can have the litter chipped and not fill out the forms until the owners collect so pup is not registered to breeder but can go straight to new owner. Will the microchipper leave me blank forms?
I know as from 2016 this can't be done but sounds like I can do it this way this time?

Thankyou for the replies so far

IF the chipper has not bought chips that are for online registration only (=slightly cheaper to buy as they do not come with forms), then yes, most would be happy to do this -but you best ask in advance.

With my last litter I had a Defra registered chipper come to my home and chip all 8 puppies he left me the forms and the bar codes and he kept a copy of each. As each puppy left me I emailed him the new owners details and he registered each puppy in the new owners name and I was on as a contact.
The Charge was £60 for the whole litter.
Under the new regulations I don't see why the same thing couldn't be done, just needs a extra box on the form for the breeders details. After all it can be done with the Insurance cover when you activate it the day the puppy is leaving you.
Does seem as if the registration companies are cashing in and getting two fees for each puppy otherwise.
