Topic Dog Boards / Health / Help I am panicking roundworm in my pup after worming meds
- By goat Date 28.03.15 09:01 UTC
Hi please can you help.  For a while my pup was bottom scooting after having been given Millbemax at the vet when we first got him and I thought he would be covered for 3 months when the scooting started I took him to the vet we ruled out worms and anal gland problems after he checked them.

The scooting continued!

On my next trip to the vet this Thursday I told the vet he was still scooting and soon due for worming again and he gave my pup (who s 4 months) two Millebemax tablets.

This morning when my puppy passed his stools I noticed a REALLY long worm in one of them it was not moving, at first I wondered if he had eaten some noodle or a bean sprout but having looked on the computer I see that it is a roundworm.  I also noticed a little clump of white looking eggs.

I am freaking out because I am worried there are more and also that the Millebemax is not working.  Why has it taken from Thur to Sat so long for a worm to come out?  Is it possible the medication does not work? Or is this normal?  Also if he had worms all this time how did the very first original dose not work or does t not really cover for 3 months?

My other worry having children is that it can be passed on to humans so does this mean I must clean the house and wash all bedding etc?

I could really do we advice I am in a panic thank you

It depends at what stage Milbemax kills worms?

Some wormers like for example Panacur will kill larval stages, so wormed properly you will never see any worms, especially if you wormed Mum in pregnancy with Panacur.

Puppies once they got to their new homes would be wormed MONTHLY until 6 months and the 3 monthly regime followed after that.

It is primarily puppies and pregnant and nursing bitches that harbour roundworms, because it's all linked to the bitches hormonal and reproductive cycle.

In 20+ years I have never seen worms in my dogs, or puppies, ever.

Monthly dosage would appear to be a god idea to avoid lungworm picked up from slugs and snails, with pups being more likely to try to eat various things including crunching snails, as well as more likely to sufer from serious consequences should they pick them up..

Sounds like pup could have had a lot of worms -how often did the breeder worm, and what with? You should have had a certificate stating this. For instance my own pups will be wormed at 3, 5 and 7 weeks if sold at 8 weeks, if the toybreed then at 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 so will have been wormed a fair few times before being sold.

The product matters as well -some of the wormers sold over the counter in petshops are pretty useless.

Milbemax is a good wormer, I think possibly pup came with a heavy burden and really should have been being wormed once a month till 6 months old. Because you've seen worms and eggs (I never see any after worming mine) I would worm again in 2 weeks and then monthly for 2/3 months.

Is it every 6 months for milbemax or is that just in adults?

just in adults, and then I would suggest only if a. you don't feed raw, b. if you don't live in an area with a high risk of lungworm and c. if the dog doesn't have regular close contact with young children. If any of these are true I would worm 3 monthly personally.

The common rule for puppies is that they should be wormed once a month till 6 months, then at 9 months and 12 months before going onto an adult worming regime.

What is the difference if being fed raw?

I will call the vet on Monday to tell him what I have seen but I wonder if this could also explain why he is so calm and lethargic also.  I know the breeder wormed the pups properly.. He did eat a snail once but I haven't seen him do it since.
I have washed all the bedding and put detol all over the floors.
It really made me feel sick seeing a worm so big I'm just glad it wasn't moving !

Kibble is cooked, so tapeworm eggs etc are killed - raw food is not.

Interesting, what scientific studies have been done to show that raw fed dogs are more likely to have round worms that processed food fed dogs Chaumsong ?

Having collies I would never use Milbemax as it has not been tested fully on Collies & even the makers admit this on their information sheets.

Having had fed my dogs naturally all my life I have never had one that had round worms after puppyhood & as my dogs are in daily contact with livestock I do regular worm counts on them & never had any adult with any species of worm

i have read that artificial wormers are not used in raw fed dogs. It has been suggested to use ground pumpkin seeds.

I've only ever used natural wormers

Please discuss with the vet, if you have seen adult worms passed the puppy is likely to have a large worm burden and a structured worming programme required to ensure worms eradicated effectively.

I will call first thing in the morning.

If he was mine I would worm him every 2 weeks and just keep checking every day for 2 months to make sure nothing else comes out then return to normal worming.
