Hi everyone, can I just ask for an opinion on something please?  My bitch is almost 5 weeks post partum and all appears well, however, my girl still scratches up periodically and I wondered if anyone else has experienced the same behaviour from their bitch?   I expected that when she was near her due date and during labour but not now.  She has had an injury to the tip of her tail which required surgery and at first, she must have been in pain with that and she was prescribed suitable pain relief by my vet (Tramadol as Metcam can't be given whilst she is nursing) however, she doesn't seem to be bothered by that anymore, she pays little attention to it now so I am assuming that isn't the problem anymore.
Her teats are all soft so I don't think she has any  discomfort with anything in that area and she is happy as Larry - she's not whining or anything - so I wondered whether this can be just something dogs do from time to time?  She does it a few times most days and at random times during the day and night.
I shall be making a vet visit with Mum and babies in a couple of weeks and of course I will mention it then and if she seems to be distressed at any time, I will contact him before, but I just thought I would make a tentative enquiry as to whether anyone else's dogs do this?

Thanks in advance.

Scratching and/or digging have always indicated pain for my bitches.  Normally as the womb is contracting back.  But certainly not 5 weeks after whelping.  I would be happier having a vet appointment now, without pups.  Better for peace of mind if a vet rules out anything more sinister.

Thank you, yes I will go and see my vet now....pups have been vet checked but I was going to take them again before they go to their forever homes.  I am wondering whether that pain might be from her tail where she had surgery because the cold or wind is probably a cause for sensitivity until the hair grows back.....but yes, I will see the vet this week, probably tomorrow.
Thanks for your time
