Why would a breeders name be removed from the Kennel Club list on their website ? A breeder that I know was on there is now no longer showing but I know they have just had a litter which they're saying will be kennel club registered.

Also how many litters can a bitch have to be an assured breeder is it 3 or 4 ?

Maybe they've already got homes lined up so need to advertise on there anymore?

NOBODY can KC register more than 4 litter from a bitch -matters not at all whether an AB or not.

I don't really see what you mean about their name being removed. Do you mean in the list of Assured Breeders? That can be removed if the breeder requests for it not to be listed, and of course if they leave the scheme. There are no other listings for breeders other than the puppy adverts that can be placed at time of registration (not before and not after), and I would assume you can request to have an ad removed once all pups have been booked.

I too am puzzled, could the OP return and explain what they meant. Many breeders have withdrawn from the ABS so it would not surprise me if that is what is being spoken of, but clarification would be good.

You can register puppies as KC reg without being on the ABS scheme and many people aren't on it and more and more are resigning from it due to the fact it has attracted some of the wrong type of breeders ie puppy farmers and many reputable breeders are do above and beyond the required health tests too for their breed.
So the find a puppy list is likely to be a lot longer than those on the ABS for each breed.

Thanks you for explaining, as has been said you do not have to be on the ABS list to register your puppies and many who were on the list have resigned because the KC has not only moved the goal posts but it seems will accept people that responsible breeders would consider unethical or cutting corners. I think I am correct in saying that you can register up to 4 litters from one bitch providing that bitch is not too young or too old and was not bred at the last season (just one litter a year)  there are circumstances when the KC will bend this rule if the reason is good and supported by a vet, but this is very rare and may well have now been stopped.

In my experience the KC often turn a blind eye to this rule, the most common reason is for a litter which is a result of an accidental mating.

I know people that have had to apply for a litter over the age limit they have set and requirements were needed like the vet check. Whether that is on every bitch over or under age I don't know but they went through the right avenue rather than trying to register and then being asked for things to be done.

Sadly there is no such rule UNLESS you are a council licensed (i.e. commercial) breeder -anyone else can have a litter from their bitch two seasons in a row.

I don't know about the KC, but the law is that councils have to licence more than 4/5 litter a year (it varies). There was something that came up in parliament last September about this, and apparently the guideline was ANY dogs being bred for sale (regardless of number of litters), with a suggestion of 4 litters - However that was before the sudden incidence of people starting to breed litters at home for money. The upshot of the debate was that councils were to be reminded that any person breeding dogs purely for sale, regardless of numbers of litters, should require a licence and local authorities were going to be informed as such.

Indeed -and local councils vary. The majority seems to have the DEFRA rule "More than 4 litters within a 12 month period" as the rule for needing a license. A few, such as the council I come under, state "Anyone who keeps more than 2 bitches for the purpose of breeding puppies to sell."  That wording worried me as I most certainly have more than two bitches, but when I contacted my council they said that I am classed as a hobby breeder because I don't breed with the purpose to SELL, I breed with the purpose to keep a pup for myself to show and just have to sell the surplus, and I can easily prove that my main interest is showing as I keep copies of all show entries. So I have it in writing from them that I do not require a license. Of course, I'd NEVER even consider breeding as many as 4 or 5 litters in a year anyway!!
