Hi
I was talking to a gentleman at Discover Dogs about a breed(different to the one I already have) that we are interested in.  He mentioned that a certain few breeders will only let folks have pups on "Breeders Terms".  I have heard the phrase before but I don't really know what it means.  Can anyone tell me please?

This will probably vary from breeder to breeder.  Many different ways of looking at it.  I'm sure someone will give you more info soon.  I know a lot of people have had problems though

Can often mean they will have the bitch back for a litter or if you have one they will choose stud and take first pick of litter.
Stud dog they will choose who he can be used on.

Essentially the breeder will in essence have full control of the dog and will remain in their name.

Like said above each breeder will stipulate something different but that's how I take it and not something I'd ever embark on

I have no desire to breed and, ideally, would prefer a male.  I wouldn't want the dog to be in anyone's name apart from mine & my husbands so I would avoid any "terms" like this.  I dearly love this breed but am not prepared to not own my own dog.

He did say "some" of their breeders have these terms so I will seek out the ones that don't.

As a breeder I breed in the hopes that at least some of the litter if good enough will have some impact on the breeds gene pool in this country (we are a minority breed here with few puppies born each year).

I still prefer not to enter into any breeding terms arrangement, as they often cause friction between the parties if one or other feels the agreement has not been fulfilled/suited them.

I always sell outright (with non breeding endorsement), and hope that the new owners become interested enough to show and perhaps allow use of their boy at stud, or breed a litter from their bitch with my support.

I have on several occasions (including my last litter) sold the most promising pup to people who were keen to show, who in the end did not, even didn't transfer pup to their names, very disappointing for me, but imagine the bad feeling if I had entered into 'breeding terms' arrangements and the owners were not prepared to fulfil them???

I know of one breeder of a British endangered breed that keeps every pup she sell in partnership but I can understand why as numbers are low and as a specialist breed owners accept her terms.

In your case I would be contacting as many breeders as possible, stating very clearly from the beginning that you are looking solely for a pet in this breed, you aren't interested in breeding and you are happy for the breeder to select the puppy for you. Anyone who is happy with this will then contact you and the others won't.

You're much less likely to have any trouble with breeding terms if you want a boy, it's the girls who are often much more controlled, both to protect them for people who would breed indiscriminately and to protect the bloodline should the breed want a litter but for some reason not be able to keep the bitch.
