Topic Dog Boards / Health / Unable to wee or poo

My frenchie who will be 8 in May hasn't been herself lately. From the end of last year her hair has thinned on her sides but has new growth it's just very fine. Last week on Tuesday evening she started to show signs of cystitis and only a drop of wee here and there. I got an appointment the next day with a vet, my preferred vet was not available. He took her temp, it was slightly high, tried to feel she tummy, it is very bloated, when he pressed right in, wee squirted out all over the table, he tested what he could from that which showed a bacterial infection. He said he needed a sterile test for other results, He prescribed cystaid and anti inflammatory painkiller, and gave her a jab too. Since then I could only get a small wee sample which I handed in on Friday, and told them I think this is an emergency and I need to see or talk with the vet as I don't want her left uncomfortable over the weekend. I did not get a call I have just had to keep her comfortable until 5pm when I get to see my own vet.I was told this morning there was not enough wee to test (I think they should of called to inform me of this! )  The problem is now she is weeing in her sleep and soaking herself, I am waking her and drying her down, I don't want her skin to get sore. And she is now unable to poo, she is passing a tiny drip when she strains. I am past myself with worry for her.
Last year she had a tag removed from just under her bum and I am hoping she hasn't got a growth internally.
I would appreciate any opinions / advice that any one can offer.

Thinning hair on the flanks is a classic sign of Hypothyroid, as is constipation. It's worth getting that ruled out.

I asked about that last week but he seemed to be steering more towards the thought of cushings. I will mention again today thank you x

My hypo girl also has urinary incontinence but I'm not sure if it is related. The Hypo blood tests cost me around £60 a time, I think the Cushings tests are a bit more involved. Hope your girl feels better soon.

> steering more towards the thought of cushings

I have a bitch with Cushings.  Her first signs were drinking excessively, bloated pot belly, always ravenous (would steal food,) and had a lot of black spots on her belly.  Looked something like black heads.  She has to be blood tested very regularly as the correct dose needs to be found.

She has been kept  in today for scans, xrays and possible surgery depending on what the vet finds, her bladder is full to bursting, vet suspects stones but she hasn't passed any blood, no blood in urine or a tumour of the neck of bladder. I am worried sick waiting for the phone to ring.
When she saw her walk through the door she said thyroid!

Update, scan did not show any stones , two x rays no tumours found :) the vet emptied her bladder, her liver and kidney tests came back perfect. Cushings has been ruled out now,
Her bladder is quite mishaped probably due to being stretched to almost bursting. Bloods have been sent to test thyroid.
She is being kept in on a drip and the vet is starting some kind of bladder meds, I don't know what they are called yet. In recovery she passed a large amount of poo, they said the xray showed it was all compact. So pleased she has passed this, and at 2pm she wee'd on her own.
4pm she refused dog food but ate the cooked chicken they offered. She is settled now.
I am so relieved I have cried with happiness, I could of visited tonight but am frightened I will unsettle her so I think I best wait until tomorrow , hopefully will get her home x

Bless you.  You must have been at your wits end.  Better that it turns out to be the thyroid than anything worse.  My old Beardie was on meds for years for thyroid with no problems.  I bet you are tired out just from the worry.

Do come back and tell us what the outcome is.  You will be hugging her tomorrow.

Glad it's nothing serious, Hypothyroid is a very easy condition to manage.

It's taken me until now to be able to talk about it, Jean I did hug her the next day but it was the last time :(
The vet found a large tumour in her rectum which hadn't shown on xray due to being compact with poo. It was inoperable, I raced to the vets and had about 30 minutes with her then cuddled her in on my knee as I let her slip away.
I am absolutely devastated, I tried my best to save her but in the end nothing could be done, my heart has felt like bursting, she is the first thought when I wake and my last at night.

I am so very, very sorry.  You don't know how much.  I feel your pain.  We have all been there but it never gets any easier.

At the end you did what you had to do and it is the only way we can show our love.  Sending some of my strength to you.
