Hi i have heard from other dog walkers in the local park that their is some sort of diarrhoea infection spreading through the area.  My puppy who is 13 weeks has had diarrhoea since Tuesday, I thought it was because I had recently switched his food from Royal Canin to Acana but I introduced it very carefully over a two week period and he had a few good days.  I took him to the vet and they gave me pro kaolin to give him and Hills tinned science plan diet.  Since starting him on this food I can't say I have noticed a difference, he still has very runny stools and I am wondering how long this can go on for.  I also wanted to know if Hills is a ploy but the vet to make people buy their products because they make money on it and whether I would be better off giving him chicken and rice for a few days and if so how much chicken can he have at each meal? He is on three feeds and weighs 5kg.  What would you do????

If you think it may infection related then take a stool sample to your vet for analysis. It may be that puppy has requires specific treatment to help stop his diarrhoea. It will sometimes take 2-3 days to settle, following a vet visit. Did your vet give you anything to keep puppy hydrated as this is always my primary concern when dealing with an extended period of diarrhoea; puppies are more at risk of dehydration than adult dogs.

Some dogs don't get along with chicken or rice very well.Opposed to the Hills tinned science plan I always find Chappie original is amazing stuff for upset tums.

if you are concerned the diarrhoea is something more sinister than a change of diet and environment only a stool sample will be able to confirm if this is the case.

meant to add:

I would always feed little and often when dealing with an upset tummy as this reduces the pressure you are putting on the pups digestive sytem. So I would decrease the amount you are feeding at each meal time but increase the frequency.

Thank you that is really good advice.  The vet didn't give anything to keep him hydrated if this continues after the weekend I will go back again and will definitely ask for a stool sample to be done I'm surprised he didn't give my anything for hydration.

Can I give pepto bismol? I have heard that dogs can have this for tummy upset.

I would go back to the vet if he is not improving. Is he drinking ? vomiting ? doing normal puppy stuff or being quiet and poorly? If after he has been on the pro-kaolin for a few days he is not improved then he needs another trip to the vet. If you want to try anything then go for cooked chicken or white fish with mashed potato (Nothing added).
I never get food from the vet. My vet has stopped selling food and accept whatever my dogs are happy on (Raw ) Yes it can be a ploy to get you to change food but if he was happy with the food you gave him then it would be better to stick to it. The vet diet is usually given to really ill dogs who are not eating as it is very high in calorific value but if you just have a tummy upset I wouldn't have thought he would need that.

He is sleeping a lot and very quiet he isn't drinking much today and hasn't passed anything since 6:00am I am worried about him but when he is awake he is fairly bright but he is a very calm, placid little puppy so it's hard to tell from that respect.

When my 6 week old pup had the same symptoms,  I held a teaspoon of water to her mouth and watched her drink it. I was doing this every 2 hours and divided her food to 6 small meals a day. She had boiled chicken breast with basmati rice, pasta or potatoes. If she really struggled with the water, I added a couple of drops of honey to the bowl. When she started to improve I swapped the chicken in some meals with a quarter tin of chappie - obviously, your quantities will be relation to your breeds' s size and feeding requirements. Be prepared to spend around £100 for the stool sample to be sent away.
