Topic Dog Boards / General / Insurance for working gundogs
- By LJS Date 05.02.15 16:19 UTC
I have been doing some research on insurance and came across this on the Countryside Alliance site.

So interested if this applies to dogs that are used purely for working eg game keepers , estate workers as a dog is part of their work or does this apply to people using their dogs as a hobby eg going picking up and entering working trials as the last statement makes it necessary for both

Does anybody here who work their dogs have this in their insurance policies ?

Thanks

Just had a quick look as someone I know does a bit of picking up and noticed this

Ask the following five key questions so you clearly understand what each policy does and doesn’t cover:
• Will the policy cover my dog for on-going conditions (e.g. eczema) into its old age?
• Will exclusions be placed at renewal for an illness that occurred in the previous year?
• Will my excess or premium increase if I make a claim?
• Will the policy cover congenital and hereditary illness, hip-related conditions, dental treatment or behavioural conditions?

I used one hand to count and still have a thumb left over

I know when looking to change my insurance provider as the one I was with won't insure a dog if you breed a litter from it. So was checking out the exclusions and all the ones I looked at didn't cover working dogs, they said things like they did not cover dogs used in the course of a business, working dogs, guard dogs, dogs trained to attack or dogs used for breeding, dog used for commercial breeding, gundogs, gundogs or dogs involded with shootings of any type.

Animal friends who I was with said 'gundogs or dogs involded with shootings of any type.' So I'd guess even done as a occasional hobby rather than an actual working dog would not be covered by then. So gundog owners who want to do that sort of thing and insure would need to check it's won't void there insurance.

I have dogs used as  personal gundogs and used throughout the shooting season. Most I surance companies will not insure a dog that is worked to gun, the exceptions are Pet plan ( linked to Countryside alliance ) and Agria ( BASC) - if there is any mention on the vet notes that the dogs works as gundog and this is discovered by insurance company the policy is void. My advise is I use with one of these companies or have a savings plan
