Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Does joint affix = joint ownership

Myself and a friend will be breeding a litter this year, the bitch is hers and we will both be keeping a puppy each. The breed isn't recognised by the british kennel club so we will have to register the puppies on the activity register although they'll be registered with the breed club and UKC where they are recognised.

We've been told that as the affix will be shared that our individual puppies will appear to be jointly owned even if we fill in the forms as just one person as the owner and therefor we will both need to sign competition applications. Thats fine for now but I intend to move a good 2 hours away in the next 5 or so years so it won't be practical anymore.

I'm waiting to hear back from the kennel club but I know there's a wealthy of information here.

You can only register the puppies with an affix if both dam and affix are in the same ownership.

If she owns the dam but you both own the affix then they can't be registered with that affix - you will have to either transfer the bitch into joint names, or transfer the ownership of the affix (or set up a separe interest in the affix). Loan of bitch may also be a possible solution.

Once the puppies are registered you can transfer into whatever ownership you like - and if they're jointly owned then as long as you have permission from the other owner then only one signature is required.

thank you  can you explain what a separate interest is? I can't quite get my head around it and how it's different to having a joint affix. Would the puppies still be registered in both of our names if theres a separate interest?

A separate interest would be an additional cost but would mean you could have the affix in the ownership of A and B, to register puppies owned by both A and B, but there could be a separate interest for just owner B, or even a different person C. Ownership (or separate interest) MUST match the ownership of the dam.
So joint ownership is for two or more people who own the affix but all their dogs are jointly owned. A separate interest is where some dogs have slightly different ownership but still want to use the same affix.
Loan of bitch would be used if it was just a one off litter as it's cheaper than a separate interest.

I understand that you can have a Joint affix or have a separate interest in an affix.

In the latter case dogs can be individually owned and bred.

http://www.sportinggundogs.com/form11.pdf is the form and it mentions adding a person with separate interest, but nothing in the guidance notes.????

For example Zena Thorne Andrews and Jeff Hoswel have 'Separate interests' in the Drakesleat affix.
