
Indeed, a month before Crufts and it all kicks off.
However, much as it's frowned upon in the UK, it was/is very common out in N.America. In fact having travelled for 12 hours to a stud I wanted (Canada to America), and finding the stud dog wasn't very keen, the following morning we took them both in, had her status confirmed, and went for an AI (collection and put in at the same time). At least that put something there so if we didn't get a normal mating, we'd hopefully come home with 'something'. We didn't but she had 5 puppies. Further, many people with popular studs often preferred to use AI rather than risk their dogs picking up infection!!
