Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Very Thick Discharge

Hi. My bitch was mated 02/01 and 04/01. She had a scan at the vets on firday to rule out Pyo/any problems as she had a yellow discharge, no smell, but vet wanted to air on the side of caution. Scan confirmed normal viable pregnancy, no pyo/normal uterus and no cervix opening. We were advised to keep an eye on her discharge. She had a small amount of clear discharge over the weekend, however this morning she has had a very thick 'glupe' of discharge hanging about 2inches from her vulva. As i tried to wipe it up with tissue it was so thick that you could feel it pulling/stretching from inside her. Again its has no smell, the same yellow tinge just far thicker. Is this normal or would you advise getting a swab at the vets? Shes fine in herself, eating, drinking and passing urine no problems. I'm currently unable to obtain my mentor so any advice appreciated. Thanks. x

I had a similar situation with Mo last year and like you the vets did a scan which confirmed pregnancy. She was also put on a course of ABs and the pregnancy progressed normally.

I've had the same.....bitch 3 1/2 weeks in whelp...very thick discharge, hanging down but no smell. This particular bitch always gets this at the end of her seasons when not mated and it has never been infection so I was not concerned. She went on to have a trouble free pregnancy, whelping and 9 healthy pups.

I have 9 bitches and all have a yellow discharge to some degree after their seasons.I do think vets are too quick to use antibiotics for any discharge which can often be vaginitis, hormonal changes or the bitch having a clear out and resetting after her season.

If no smell and not turning browny I leave alone.....good luck.

This sounds like vaginitis.   Your vet should be able to diagnose, and treat.   And I'd go for a swab.
