I have just had a phone call from someone who wants to see my dogs as they are thinking of getting a newf but they want to do some research on the breed before they take the big step.
The thing is they have just phoned me and it's 10 o clock at night, he chap seemed nice enough but why ring me so late at night.
I would not dream of ringing a stranger so late.
Does anyone think this is odd or am i just paraniod?

Hi
To be honest I wouldn't let them round, they might be casing the joint so to speak..might be genuine I know, but better to be safe than sorry.
have you got a contact number for them ??
Wouldn't they be better going to discover dogs at crufts and chatting all about them there ??
When you've had a dog stolen , you don't take any more chances trust me. :)

Hi Tracey,
The theft aspect didn't really occur to me - that's more than possible. :(

Hi Peanuts,
I would think they're just rude and thoughtless. If they were enquiring about a puppy that would be a mark against them, however misguided of me that may be.

they said that they have a chance of a puppy, so i asked them why they did not go and see the breeder ( i don't breed ) they said that the breeder was i wales and i was nearer to them to see the newfs in the home environment.
I think that i will cancel and tell them sunday will be better ( my other half and brother will be here )

I called somebody regarding a dog once after 10pm, but only because I didn't realise how late it was. I felt terrible afterwards! I remember that we were all so excited and engrossed in puppy talk that we thought it was still fairly early. Normally I wouldn't dream of calling so late! Anyway, i'd be a bit wary too!

I had someone call me at 11.30pm one evening to ask about a puppy. They were completely thoughtless I have to say. They worked full time and were not planning on taking any time off work to see to the pup but were going to let their teenage son look after it in his two week holiday from school!!!!!!!! I listened to her going on in absolute horror.I kindly told her I couldn't sell to someone who worked full time and she said one of her collegues had already mentioned this to her!!!! I was pretty blunt after that. If it had just been genuine excitement then I would have understood, but she said she was just back from work so thought she would ring me!
Trust your instinct, even if you can't put your finger on it, if the feeling is no then stick to your guns.
Best Wishes

The more i think about the worse feeling i get, the chap seemed ok but he was only forthcoming with information about himself if i asked him a question.
It's 12.30 now and i can't sleep, got myself in a pickle what if this and what if that!!
He was really interested if i had a bitch oh god what have i done!!!
But where did he get my address from. stupid stupid not to ask!
I have never been contacted before about someone wanting to see my dogs, as i do show but i do not breed only my friends come to see them.
Has anyone got good guard dog i can borrow ( only joking :) ).
What about a big big brother you know someone who wrestles for a living :)
I really hope that they are genuine.

As you show could they ahve got your address and phone number from a show catalogue?

I like Sams idea of taking the dog to their house to see how they'd cope - it's amazing how much bigger something looks in your own home.

I hope that it is all ok and he's not got any horrible ideas,

Peanuts...yes I would be paranoid. Firstly how did they get your telephone number? If it were me and the person had been given my number by someone I knew & trusted then I would offer to take a dog to them (if they are near by) but not have them come to me. You can use the excuse that they can then see how a big newfie would fit in with their house.

Sam,

Show catalogues list names, addresses and telephone numbers. I used a show catalogue myself recently in my search for a pup.

well Colin (my other half ) rang him this morning to say that we will not be availible till sunday.
He told Colin that that would be to late as he was going to see the puppy on Saturday.
This just gets stranger and stranger don't you think, why leave it this late to do research on a breed when you are going to see the puppy in two days time.
I think that will be his lot.
In future i will tick the box that says If you don't want your address printed please tick here!!!

I always go with the way I feel..if you are not feeling good about it listen to yourself ...women's intuition :)

Don't worry Peanuts, he is probably very excited to be seeing the pups in Wales but has not really seen enough of them to know whether they are good pups - your dogs should be flattered that they are to be held up as the benchmark for Newfs. He may also feel he will miss the opportunity to get one of the pups in Wales which is why he is flapping around - when some people make a decision to buy something, they just want things done on mad timetables!

Anyway - you could always put him off by telling him how much they have to eat to maintain their figures!. And if he turns out to be dodgy, can't you just get all the Newfs to sit on him?
good luck

Hi Peanuts,

If you're gut feeling is telling you somethings not right (which I think it is) then be careful, like dogs we can sense when somethings wrong...we all have instincts which protect us..
