My vet is insisting that she will give the vaccine 10 days after mating and 2 weeks before whelping but i keep reading that some do it before mating which makes more sense to me but my vet will not do that.Is 10 days after mating ok?

The time scale is variable, but doesn't make sense to do before mating as you might not get her mated, does happen.

The datasheet says "Two 1 ml doses of vaccine, administered by subcutaneous route, according to the following schedule:
First injection: Either during heat or 7 – 10 days after the presumed date of mating.
Second injection: 1 to 2 weeks before the expected date of whelping."

10 days after mating is perfectly okay, and at least then you know that the mating has actually taken place!

How will you know what day she will be mated on, as anyone who has used idexx will know they could be 'ready' for mating on all sorts of odd dates from day 8 to in the late 20s. Although not the norm it does happen

My girl was mated last Monday week ( 2nd mating ) and the vaccine was given this Monday.
I have had the vaccine in previous litters since losing an entire litter and have never had it done before the mating.
As I understand it is a killed vaccine and lasts for a given number of days which expires towards the end of pregnancy which is why it is given again.
I usually take my vets advice and the day he suggests to have it done.

I was having a chat with a repro vet last week about herpes and he said it would be silly not to use it and no data to say it has Any negative impact. I asked when he felt was the best time and he said he recommends on day one of the season to allow it to settle down prior to mating.
I guess thats one more opinion

My vet vaccinated my bitch 9 days after mating and again a week before whelping.
