Topic Dog Boards / Health / My dog ate her toy!
- By Doglover [us] Date 12.02.03 14:33 UTC
My wife and I bought our huskey a stuffed animal toy for her to play with.
After a couple of days we did not find half the toy, I assumed she buried it somewhere. 3 weeks later she vomitted 4
big clumps of the toy and allot of vomit. She was weak and very down in spirit. around midnight we decieded to take her
to the pet ER. We had x-rays done and the doctor said she could not really see anything. Our dog pooped after she left the vet
and she was walking around more. During the night we kept an eye on her and she seemed fine. The following morning she
vomited grass she ate. Should I feed her dry food or wet food. Do you think all the toy came out. If anyone went through this
please help.

Thank you.

Hi Guest
not an expert by any means but I would think that if her spirits have lifted and if she has emptied her bowels then hopefully she has passed all the toy that she ate and is on the mend.I would feed her her usual diet but only in small amounts to start off with.

Don't worry about her eating grass and bringing it up again-its not unusual

My wife just checked on our dog at lunch and she vomited again. It's green and filled with grass. I was thinking about feeding her wet food, It might go throught easier than dry food. Any suggestions?

Thanks again.

Changing her diet may only upset her stomach .You could always add hot water too her normal food to soften it first but I really wouldn't go changing her food.If you really don't want to give her what she normally eats I would give her a litte boiled chicken to get her started.
If your still worried maybe another visit to the vets would set your mind at ease?

Had a similar problem with one of mine, he ate most of a squeaky toy while we were out and for the next two days he didn't go for a number two. He did sick up quite a few piles of yellowy frothy stuff with LOTS of bits of toy in them. Took him to the vet [the dog was behaving like his normal self by now], and was told he was probably fine as he wasn't depressed/sickly looking and to wait the next 12 hours for him to pass a number two, and if he didn't to bring him back as he may have a blockage. We were told to give him his normal food in small portions [split into fifths throughout the day] soaked in warm water.
My dog was also eating grass manically only to bring it up an hour or so later - i think he was trying to clear himself out. And it worked, because he did do a poo within the twelve hours.
Have learnt my lesson now - he only gets indestrucible toys!!

To the best of my knowledge, if she has a blockage caused by the stuffing of the toy, it will not show up on xray.

You might want to take her back to the vet

Update: My wife took our husky to the vet last night for a second opinion. The vet gave our dog fluids and medicine to help her with her stomach aches. We watched her all night and she was very sleepy from all the shots. This morning we went to see how she was and she was wagging her tale. She is walking around now and has not vomited all night. She seem 85% back to normal. I learned a great lesson in buying dog toys. I will never by a stuffed toy. Thank you for everyones help!
