Topic Dog Boards / Health / Very puzzled over early season - help!

Hi

I looked back at one of my old posts and ascertained that Sophie,  my WFT, first came into season at the beginning of October last year at 7 months old.  She was an utter nightmare. As a breed WFTs are a handful (not for the faint hearted LOL) but having got over that first season and going to training classes (and growing up) she has gradually improved.  She is a real character and exceptionally affectionate I must say!.  However over the last few days her behaviour has been no less than dreadful,  jumping on our other 3 dogs,  howling and moaning etc etc.  I have to say that I had noticed a few watery odd looking little marks on my (white) kitchen floor but couldn't imagine what was causing it (doh!!).  Today I took one look at Madam's backside and it was only too plain that she has again come into season - just three and a half months after the first season!  At least this accounts for the way she has been.  Can anyone tell me if this is normal - that a dog should have two seasons before she is 12 months old?  She seems well in herself, eating well, pooing and weeing OK etc.  And when can I expect her to have the next one?  Please God it won't be every three and a half months? Aaarrgghh!!!

Many years ago I had a terrier cross bitch exactly the same.  Eventually I had her spayed due to really bad phantoms.

How long was she in season for the first time?

I have had a terrier bitch come into season at 8/9 months half heartedly -  very little swelling,  hardly any blood etc,  and then a 'proper'  season about 3 months later.    It was quite funny actually,  as she was like a baboon at the back end on the second season,  and it was snowy outside.   She kept asking to go out,  and then sitting in the snow -  I swear it sizzled when she sat down poor love :-D

Happily,  she then went to 7/8 month seasons afterwards.   And never swelled as badly either LOL

I have had the same experience dill with young bitches.

I didn't notice the swelling the first time actually but this time it is huge!!  So maybe she will settle down into a normal time frame.  Fingers crossed ....!

Oh yes and constantly asking to go outside too .......

LOL

Well where else is she going to find a 'man'?   The snow is just an added benefit     Don' t forget to keep a close eye,  even in the garden.

Ask around in the breed to see if its common.
I had a GSD bitch many years ago who only went 4 months between seasons...fairly common in them though.

All mine that did have more frequent seasons to start sorted themselves to a more normal 6 - 8 months after a couple of seasons, none had fertility issues.

How long she was in for the first time is relevant because it is possible for a bitch to have a 'split season' especially to begin with, until things have settled down.

However, I did have just one, who came in bang on 6 months - unusual for my girls who all started at around 8 months, and cycled at that interval.   She came from a mating that only produced her which may or may not have been relevant .  She was one that was quite a few generations into my breeding programme, with them all cycling at 8 monthly intervals.   She then came in again 5 months later (the first was a full 21+ day season) and continued to do this for the few seasons she had.  This I didn't need - not only was it pulling her down (phantoms), but it was also unnecessarily driving the males nuts .    In the end, as she really wasn't maturing into one I was very happy to show (she did go to a few early shows with some success) or to take a litter from, I made the decision to have her spayed which obviously sorted out all that every 5 months business!
