Hi and happy new year :-) I am trying to decide between getting a standard wire haired dachshund dog or a bitch puppy. I have never had a Dachshund before and I have only ever had girls in the past. However I have seen two pups that are really gorgeous both are boys. I don't know if there is a big difference in temperament between dogs and bitches. I have been told that the dogs are more comical. Should I go for a boy or a girl? Is it true that boys scent and mark everywhere and would this stop after they are neutered? Are the boys more prone to getting into fights or being aggressive? Thanks for any help

Do you have any dogs currently as that could affect answers :) I've had experience of a couple of male dogs - one by itself unneutered and one neutered living with a bitch - and neither marked in the house or were aggressive :) Just a joy to be with :)

Hi Daisy I don't have another dog but I do have children. How did you pick and decide on a boys and what were they like?

I'd only had experience of male dogs as a child, so had my OH. It seemed obvious to get a male when we had to choose a family dog - we'd not had a negative experience :) Our current dog is female as we thought it better having a female as a companion to our male dog.

Thank you would Daisy. I have heard that the girls are not as friendly as the boys and come to you on their own terms but I know everybody's experiences are different and no two dogs are the same it is just such a hard decision to make. I do worry with a male about humping as well!!!!

If you don't have lots of dogs or a breed known to not get on with their own sex, I don't think sex matters a lot -and you get humping bitches as well as dogs. :) Leg cocking bitches too -plus neutered males can and often do cock their legs everywhere as well. It's more issues on whether you have several dogs, what sexes, entire or not, plus above all training.
I have no idea what the situation is like in this breed, I'd assume their litters aren't all that small, but thought I'd point out that in breeds with small litters, it is more or less impossible to buy a bitch pup as a pet as they will be kept back for breeding or showing or sold to other breeders, with only the dog pups going to pet homes.

In my breed I have found that generally the bitches are way smarter than my males. My boys are generally quite happy to do as requested but my girls have to be told in no uncertain terms! My boys will stand by the patio gate even when it's not latched waiting for me to open it but the girls, well if I don't want them down the garden I have to put a loop of rope over the gate and post or they let themselves out. Same as the back door. if I don't want them outside I have to lock the door or they let themselves out.

I'v . Got both male and female but different breeds my male dies scent mark or any if the other behaviours you mention and only trues to hump if the bitch is in season. My pimx bitch however does hump my male gsd at times lol. I have also had a female gsd and tbh I would be happy to have either gender. It would be useful to have a daxie person here if possible

My mini smooth Dachshund boy has never marked in the house, he has just turned 2 years old, lives with several girls and has sired one litter. He is not aggressive with other males he meets, but doesn't want to play with them either. I think it's important to put the work in when they are puppies, always go out in the garden with them, to be sure that they have "been" and not just put them out and expect them to know what you want them to do.
