My Alaskan Malamute is being sick in the mornings it was every couple of days but now more frequent.  Due to his other issues (IBD, hip dysplacia, undershot jaw) I orignally put it down to this being normal for him, but. As I said its now started to be every morning.  I have tried to break his meals down to four meals a day last feed around 9 - 10pm which helped a little but now it seems to have stopped helping.

He is very quite, on and off his food and crys.  With eating he is fine for one to two days, then the following morning he will either stare at it or lie there crying, if he does try to eat it he crunches it up and spits it out.  He is on burns pork and potato dry food which is has been fine one, but I am unable to change his food due to his IBD, another long story.  We've had serveral tests and X-rays and nothing is showing up and we are currently waiting on test results for Addison's disease but if this comes back clear im worried there is nothing else they can look for, and unsure what to do next?

Has anyone had anything similar?  I don't know what to do and he isn't his normal self and that's whats worrying me, dispite the other issues he is normally a happy boy, charging around and playing.  Always telling me it's time for his dinner etc and I'm not getting any of that.  Even as sad as it sounds I normally get woken up at 6am for breakfast but he isn't doing that either, he seems so sad

Sorry he is also currently on tramadol, and antibiotic and an anti sickness tablet to see if that helps???

Is he bringing up food or bile/frothy stuff?
- By MissAmEdwards [gb] Date 31.12.14 12:42 UTC
Bile/frothy stuff.  The two types of anti sickness tablets seem to be helping as he hasn't been sick for a few days now but he is still very quiet, crying and howling.  His had X-rays on his back end and they can't see anything in there that looks strange, the Addison's disease results came back clear as well.  Next step is to be referred for CT and ultrasounds as his hips seem to be giving him discomfort as well now so not sure is its all connected???

has he had any kind of scan on his stomach or throat? I'm wondering if he might have some kind of tumor growing there that is irritating? or stomach ulcers? It sounds like he is in pain so there MUST be something going on, I don't know what it's called but the camera on a stick thing down the throat to see if there is a problem with his stomach, could the tramadol have inflamed it?

I'm far from expert and these are just my thoughts, I hope you get it sorted for him. x

No just X-rays at this stage.  His only been on tramadole this week he was on another pain killer but recently learned that can cause ulcers so have stopped giving him that.  As the vet isn't sure what to do now he wants to refer him for the CT scans extra so I'm hoping this might show something more.  It just breaks my heart seeing him like this, he is normally fully if beans and drivin is mad but all he does is sleep or cry, we have to wait until the weekend until we can get an appointment due to it bein New Years eve but we've been given another type of pain killer to give him as well.  It's just so upsetting and frustrating his only 4!

Bile/froth can simply be a sign of an empty tummy. My dog was ill like this for ages and was given all sorts of anti sickness medication before one vet pointed out it was due to something so simple. Try giving a larger supper. Hope he's better soon.

Just an update from today

Not coming home tonight he's gotta have an MRI scan first thing tomorrow, they examined him and the orthopaedic said he has server pain in his back and lower spine plus in his hips more so in the right one

They said it could be swelling or a pinched nerve but won't no until they look tomorrow, one reason his back dips could be a sign of trying to relieve the pressure off his back or hips coz it's more comfortable.

They are also going to take biopsy of his tummy and bowel as it hasn't been done since he was a puppy just to make sure nothing has changed or got worse.  The ultrasound seemed normal but she said there could be some inflammation of the bowel but that's why they want to do that.

Being sick might be connected to the pain, as he isn't eating coz he is in pain then has an empty tummy which is making him feel sick but again still carrying out the other tests.

Bloods and urine results will be back tomorrow.

We could of picked him up but I have to get him back there before 8am tomorrow and she said he is still coming round and settled so they will feed him later and keep an eye on him

My poor puppy it's breaking my heart I hate this

I'm thinking of starting a Facebook page to make people aware of bad breeding and for people to share their stories will post when it's up and running if anyone would be interesting in following

Leaving aside his tummy problems if he has severe pain in his back and lower spine and also HD I'm very sorry to say this but I would be thinking of letting him go. I am typing this, rather than saying nothing to make sure you have considered this option. Vets have a tendency to never suggest it, they keep fighting for your pet and keep trying but if the basic problem that is causing him severe pain cannot be easily fixed then you have to consider quality of life.

My thoughts are with you and your boy.
