Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Another new food

I have just seen an advert from Royal Canin who have brought out another new food. This one is for dogs who live an Urban Life. Am I the only one who thinks that these foods are getting ridiculous now? I can sort of understand how they get away with puppy, adult and senior. Then you have the high energy and weight loss ones. Rc also do size nutrition so food for small/ med / large dogs

I thought they had gone a bit too far when they introduced the foods for different breeds. and the number of breeds they now cater for now has expanded considerably and most seem to offer a junior and an adult. You would think that would be enough different types but  no. they have just brought a lifestyle food with choices for urban and country dogs! also offering adult, junior and senior versions

Is there really any justification for all these different types of food?  It seems to be really over the top to think that dogs need a different food if they live in a built up environment. Is there any scientific proof that these foods are beneficial or is it just a case of Royal Canin thinking up different ways to market the same old food.  As a raw feeder it seems totally ludicrous to me to offer so much choice when people dont get advice on how to adjust their diet depending on their racial background or living sittuation. Why would dogs be so complex to feed or is it just money making from gullible dog owners?

ETA I wonder if trading standards should investigate RC s claims for the different foods.

I saw that. They are preyng on people's nuerosis (mine included) I often worry about the level of pollution my dog is exposed to. But I certainly wouldn't think Royal Canin could help. I do give her lots of fresh veggies and dont walk her on the high road.

They try the same with cat owners. Didn't you know, Persian cats cannot physically eat any other food than theirs because their mouths can't pick up other shapes? Talk about an insult. I had two cats die from RC, now they are all 100 % raw fed and a lot healthier -and they don't have the slightest problems eating. :)

I know!  It worries me terribly that RC have not yet brought out the correct feed for my dogs, dependent on which party they vote for.

They have also recently bought out new food for Agility Dogs, different for Small dogs and Med/Large dogs. We were sent some free samples as we are an Agility Club, when i looked at what was in it I wouldnt feed it to mine!

It also came with several samples of an energy supplement that they are selling too.

Well that's why I just HAD to feed Bramble raw for 15 years :( :( Being of unknown origin, how could I feed him any kibble ???? None could possibly be right :( Poor lad - doomed from conception never to be fed properly ;) ;)

Talk about bandwagon!  So many 'smaller' companies starting out too offering 'the best food ever'. I can only ever consider raw feeding, so that I KNOW what they are eating. The ones that really bug me as well are the ones that contain joint supplements.   The amount is so negligible it would never do a thing, and gullible people are lured into thinking they have that 'problem' nailed.  The latest 'fad' also seems to be feeds in excess of 30% protein.....including for puppies (all ages) which I find ridiculous, and frankly dangerous, implying 'more is better'.

Let's hope their promo people don't see that idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Red, blue, yellow, green and ??? coloured kibbles perhaps.

Well yes & no, to make the ultimate contradictory comment.

Thing is, most, though not all, dogs living & exercising in urban environments will probably need less carbohydrates & fats than those in the countryside areas, now the weather is cool/cold country dogs will generally be far more active in an environment which caters for those levels of activity than urban dogs, so a higher fat/carbohydrate diet is not amiss on them.

I don't know Royal Canine or how many varieties it sells.

The Urban Life product is also supposed to be higher in antioxidants - counteracting the effects of pollutants that urban dogs are exposed to. But increasing veg etc would be just as effective if not more.

Has anybody had time to sit and compare the ingredients/recipe of all these RC varieties I wonder.   The cynic in me suggests there's no really significant difference.   It's just all a sales gimmic???

Yes of course but then again just how many "New and improved" versions do we buy from Detergent manufacturers?
Every few months they tell us that the new one is SO much better. Perhaps we should get a refund on their previously 'inferior' product? :-)
- By Tish [gb] Date 08.01.15 10:20 UTC
It is preying on owners insecurities in this case. The most ridiculous thing about the RC ones is there is one for nearly every small breed. The only difference I have ever noticed when buying a small breed kibble was the size of the kibble (it's tiny). My dog only has it kibble occasionally so just bought Oijen which she does enjoy.

Bought a small bag of the 'GSD' for Zuma (on offer in Crufts) he refused to eat it even mixed with his usual. He is not your typical GSD for food as he is sometimes refered to 'ShovelGuts
Passed it on to a non gsd owner!

Obviously I'm not the only one who thinks this!!!!!   Perhaps somebody with enough dosh, should challenge these manufacturers in Court!
