Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Drontal or Panacur?
- By egbert [gb] Date 02.12.14 17:14 UTC
I've been reading various posts where breeders seems to advocate either Drontal or Panacur 10% but I can't decipher if there is a particular reason for the preference? And do you use the same wormer for bitch and pups?

Plus, some recommend worming pups at 2 weeks and some at 3 - is this due to size difference? When do you do the mum?

Sorry - hundreds of questions but I seem to get different advice from different vets, so interested to see how the actual experienced breeders think as opposed to the vets.

Thanks

Panacur is licensed for use in pregnancy where administering all through the last trimester should reduce transference to pups by 98%.  It's the only one licensed for this purpose.

For pups and after whelping it's personal choice.

The Drontal for puppies is not the same as for adults, as it only covers the roundworms, so similar to the Panacur.

Some breeders have had issues with one or other product.

IN the end these are strong chemicals, so always a chance for some reactions to occur..

AS I use Panacur on my in whelp bitches I don't worm the pups until 3 weeks then again at 7 weeks before they go to new homes when I advise worming at 11 weeks so they are done in between vaccinations.

We all have our own preferences. I never worm a pregnant bitch, I worm at time of mating, and then later when the pups are wormed. I worm pups with Drontal Puppy Suspension at 3, 5 and 7 weeks and tell the new owners to repeat at 9 and 11 weeks. (Unless it is my toybreed that stays until 12-14 weeks, in which case I do all the worming as pups myself.)

Panacur doesn't seem to upset the stomach the way frontal can. I have also used milbamex (I think that's the name)

and others will find Panacur upsets and Drontal doesn't.

I don't think that the size of pups is the deciding factor.  I have the tiniest breed you can get and do pups at 14 days (3 day dosing, but mum is done for ONE DAY ONLY at adult dose.)

Like Barbara mentions, it is the one I have used for years basically because it is recommended for pregnant bitches (and has been tested at many times the recommended dose quite safely.)

I use Panacur 10% on pregnant bitches from day 40 of pregnancy.  It is only a tiny dose, quarter of the adult dose.  I have never had any ill effects and have nothing but praise for Panacur, but people who have had problems will be just as adamant about their chosen wormer.

At the end of the day we all have our preferences.

Called into my Vets yesterday to pick up some wormer for pregnant bitch & asked which was recommended........she said Drontal, milbemax & panacur were all safe to give to Pregnant bitches.........

I've wormed pups once they have started eaten foods (a puppy porridge type of thing) so around 3 weeks

For anyone reading that doesn't know.  You would never use Milbemax on Collies.

Also all may be safe but all won't do what you want that is stop transference to pups by dealing with early larval forms.

So fine for 'worming' a bitch, but I only worm in pregnancy to recued worm burden in new-borns.

To remove worms from the bitch I'd worm when she came in season.
