I have just had a litter of pups, and sold them mainly through this site, but two were sold through another site as they were hand reared, and not so big at a much reduced  price. On the two cheaper ones I put that I do return deposits.
On the pups on this site, I do NOT put this, and to be truth full It has never been needed to be addressed either.
Unfortunately, I took a large deposit, his offer, not my ask, if you see what I mean, half of the asking price from a Gentleman, who found it very difficult to visit, he sounded very nice to speak to on the phone, and got passed the phone interrogation, and we exchanged many emails, followed by lots of puppy pictures, as they grew up, which they were always very happy to receive. He had semi chosen via the pictures, but to be honest, I had marked him pick of litter, as he had really left it to me to choose the best for him, as he was frist to phone me.
I give out the pet plan insurance [4 weeks free] he asked me to sign another receipt, as he then told me he had visited a solicitor, and been advised to have this receipt signed, which he had written up himself.
I said I have never had to do this before, and as I give a puppy contract out along with a small invoice, which also has name address, price, date etc, I found it not really necessary to sign anything else, and said as much to him.
Well with that he has asked for his deposit back and says he feels uneasy about the sale and wishes to walk away. I had people waiting on the list so his pup was rehomed that evening.
The pups all passed their vet check with flying colours, and the vet commented, it was the best litter she had ever health checked. How do I stand, he came via champ dogs, and I was a little surprised to hear  he had been trawling the other dog sale sites, where he had found the two pups I had had to bottle rear.
I have been breeding for 40 years, never had a complaint, a dog returned, as I am sure you all have found, with being carful who you book your pups to.
So what would you do.

I would just return the deposit. You had no trouble placing the puppy so why would you want to keep it?
The gentleman has given a large deposit and no doubt would take legal action to recover it. You didn't state deposits are non-refundable and you accepted more than you should have, just give it back and save yourself the hassle and unpleasantness that will surely follow.
Just my opinion as a pet owner.

Return the deposit. You've sold the pup the same day so you're not out of pocket at all so no justification to keep it. And as he's the sort of chap to consult a solicitor (if true) then you'd be leaving yourself wide open for legal action against you.

I don't understand why a) you would have a problem with giving him a receipt worded the way he wanted it, and b) why you would even consider not giving the deposit back.

Trevor Cooper always says that a receipt for a pup bought is a huge part of proving who owns a dog or not -as KC registration does not prove ownership. I've had people asking for actual receipts in addition to the figure being mentioned in my contract, and I just do it.

Return the deposit, you've had no out of pocket expenses, so no reason to keep it.

Same as the others..in this case, return the deposit :) I can understand your reluctance to sign his paperwork, as I, like you, cover all that kind of thing in the puppy contract but best save yourself any agro from him.

As a puppy buyer I would be very disappointed & upset if you did not return the deposit under these circumstances.  I would also be wondering why you were so reluctant to sign an extra receipt.

You managed to rehome the puppy on the same day the original buyer changed his mind so there has been no extra expense or worry for you.  Surely the only reasonable thing to do in this situation is to return the deposit ...

This would be a win/win situation for all concerned with no risk of things getting complicated and difficult and there could be sighs of relief all round!

I don't understand - why would you consider not returning the deposit?
