Topic Dog Boards / Health / Pants for a boy after losing his "bits"?
- By Lokis mum [gb] Date 20.11.14 22:09 UTC
Tomorrow Odin is going to the vet's and will be castrated.   We have decided upon this course of action because of the fact that he has an enlarged prostate.   He's happy, healthy and aged 4, and is my baby lab!    Trouble is, he is also the "baby dog" of the pack, and is regularly groomed and licked and washed by Freya and Eydis - and this is where I can see a problem.   Even if he comes home with an Elizabethan collar, Freya and Eydis would still want to kiss him better - and that's why I'm wondering - should I put some pants on him? :-D

Anyone else had any experience of this?

Could you get a onesie that would fit him ? I know lots of people that have used baby grows on smaller breeds after spaying and castration and they've worked instead of having a collar. Just trying to size up with a onesie.

Rather than trying to put anything on him to stop this, I'd suggest you simply have him in another place, where the girls can't get to him - at least until the incision has healed.   He's bound to be upset enough having to wear a cone, without putting 'pants' on him as well?

Hopefully he won't need anything - Piglet didn't when he was castrated. He didn't take any notice of the wound at all. He'd probably be more relaxed if he was separated from the girls when you couldn't be there to stop them bothering him.

A tiny dash of perfume on a cotton ball and wipe on his stifles or somewhere NEAR but not too near any wound or opening.
No one will lick his bits.

I swear when my Bernese was done he wore a pair of my husbands pants with a hole cut out for his tail, the cone was so big and he really didn't seem to mind at all!!! The window cleaners face was a picture when he saw him in the garden !!

Would worry about interfering with the healing process you would have to be careful that the .pants, did not get wet or soiled - may be better to keep him with you and away from any other dogs for the week it will take to close if all goes well.

My boys didn't bother at all with the castration wound, the next day they were back running in the field and neither of them licked it once. It's such a small op I don't think Odin will notice at all once the anaesthetic wears off. I didn't need buster collar or coverings for the boy zois. I'd wait and see, if the girls are going to be diligent about keeping him clean then you may need some shorts.
