Topic Dog Boards / Health / Incurin vs Propalin

My 15 year old girl has just recently had the odd night of leaking.

Until today it was just the odd damp patch in her bed, maybe twice a week at most.

This morning the vet bed in the basket she had slept in was noticeably heavy, so more than a dribble.

Checking dosage levels and price on-line 30 tablets (up to 3 doses) of Incurin, are far more cost effective at around £12 compared to Propalin which would need a 12ml daily dose with 100ml at over £25 would last just 8 days.

Obviously I would do what is best for the dog, but cost factors in al being equal.

I would prefer the once a day tablets are ease of administration as I really don't want to feed 3 times a day (Propalin would be 4ml three times a day).

This is the first time I have had one with any urinary incontinence, but she is the first to get to 15.

My old girl did far better with Incurin tablets than Propalin; she weighed 25kg yet only needed half a tablet every other day to keep her dry. She was 15 as well.

Yes I noticed that you start with one tablet and if it works cut to half and see if it still works.

oops that should have read 30 doses in a 30 tablet pack of Incurin
- By Brainless [gb] Date 07.11.14 22:41 UTC
Just realised I read the dosage for Propalin wrong and a daily dose would be 1.2ml not 12ml, so approximately 30p a day at Hyperdrug prices (though of course there is the vets prescription on top), and the Incurin at 1 tab a day is 40p.

Depending on Vets mark up whether I buy from him or get a script and buy on-line.

So for such an old lady which is likely to have least negative side effects.

No owners whose animals are on these meds have ever reported any negative side-effects at all; it just seems to be a question of finding the one that works best for the individual animal. In my girl's case the propalin made little difference whereas the Incurin stopped the wetting almost immediately - other people have found the opposite.

The Incurin makes the bladder sphincter cells more 'perky' and therefore more susceptible to the action of the Propalin.
I found with my 14 year old, the odd Incurin tablet now and then kept the Propalin working really well. On its own, not so much.

My girl has been on Propalin for the last couple of years and started out on 3 doses of 0.50ml a day but I have gradually got that down to two doses of 0.40ml a day. I could probably drop this down again with some trial and error. It is expensive though. The last lot I purchased from my vet was pushing £40!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 08.11.14 12:41 UTC
Gosh it's only £26 for 100ml at Hyperdrug, but of course once you add in the cost of a vets prescription it would mean it still worked out over £40, unless vet script was £10 or less.

£21.50 at VetMedic ...

I have often wondered why vets always seem to prescribe Propalin rather than Incurin, which must surely be easier? They gave it to me for one of my old girls when the Propalin stopped working, and it seemed very effective - I wondered if they don't like giving it until later term, so save it for a 'second try'?

At 15 I think I'd prefer the Incurin as some of the side effects mentioned for propalin are arythmias and not indicated with kidney issues, at 15 I'd think I'd want to take care with anything that might affect vital organs.

Contraindications on the Incurin seem to be just hormonal, higher risk of developing mammary tumours at high doses (she isn't going to live that long)..

My girl has been on Incurin successfully for many years. She has one tablet on Monday, Weds. and Friday and half every other day. As the max is said to be 2 per day, Saffi has a very low dose but when I have tried reducing Wednesday's dose to a half, we do get a big "leak" so I just maintain her at the dose that suits her. My vets charge £8 for a script.

Last time I had a script from my vet it was for six months and cost 8 pounds, so cheaper to buy on line

So looks like I will need to get the first month from Vet and then ask for a script assuming he doesn't charge too much for one, as it will be about a week turn around to get script to them and then meds back.

Ask the vet for a repeat prescription, so that you can get your moneysworth on the prescription fee. I think they can only do a max of 3 months repeat. Strangely Incurin did nothing for an old girl of mine a way back, but Propalin worked a treat.

Well I my vet put less than £10 on the price at Hyperdrug for Propalin, so can't complain as with Script and posting it off would work out same, and would have meant a weeks delay..

He also put her on a weeks Antibiotics, on the basic with the leaking she may have an infection, Cystititis.

So now £87 lighter.

With the bill for tooth extraction and removal of a large cyst in July she has cost me £450 this year, less than any Insurance especially with excess.

She has strict instructions that I expect value for money so she is not allowed to die any time soon.  it's her 15th birthday in a weeks time.

:) :) I'm sure that she will keep going for a long time if only to make you spend the money ! :) :) :)

As she has been pretty vet visit free for most of her 15 years she is worth it.
