Question is the Vet a reproductive specialist, or even have much knowledge of breeding bitches???

Sounds like the panic my friend was put through with perfectly normal pregnancy discharge.

We all told her to hang fire and have AB's if the vet really was worried but with no smell from the discharge, bitch well in herself, we were proved right and a lovely normal size litter duly arrived.

Well if my friend had listened to the vet she would have spayed the bitch and not had the litter, which would have been a loss to the breed when only about 10 litters a year are currently being bred.

Remember the relaxin test can give false negatives.  Some Amazon reviews: http://www.amazon.com/Canine-Pregnancy-Test-Kit-tests/product-reviews/B00076NOB4

Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This review is from: Canine Pregnancy Test Kit (5 tests) (Misc.)

I researched this product and it's reviews before purchase. I initial used this test on my bulldog at 25 days from last breeding with a negative result. I waited a week(as manufacture recommends) and re-tested with still a negative result. By the 35th day from breeding she was beginning to show signs of pregnancy and after an ultra-sound was confirmed pregnant (by visual and heartbeats). All three tests was preformed by my vet at $15.00 per blood drawl/spin and $35.00 for the ultra-sound.

What you should know before purchasing/using this test:
The amount of relaxin (serum relaxin level) being produced at the time of the tests depends on the breed, the size of the breed, the size of the litter, LH(luteinizing hormone) surge and when the test is preformed.

For example: If the litter is small there may not be enough relaxin being produced to react with the test. The same would be true if it is a small breed or preformed to early.

I now believe the best option for my female bulldogs in the future will be an ultra-sound as recommended by my vet."

In USA people can buy a lot of medications without prescription and do some procedures themselves legally.

I felt she was too quick suggesting it last week but the other vet who has bred said she was happy on abs with the discharge coming away I asked for scan and relaxin , the scan today at 25days 2 vets ummed and ahhed then said they couldnt see anything I thought its still too early for it to be conclusive and wait the vet who suggested alzin the week before said no, when I quieried what was going on inside she said horns had a little bit of fluid but not huge mass like pyo so basically reset her, weve had pyo before another bitch hers was green then turned brown fast and smelled

I dont know im thinking to rescan
- By Brainless [gb] Date 28.10.14 22:20 UTC
Scan results really do depend so much on the skill of the scanner.

25 days would be soon enough for someone really good at scanning assuming the bitch took right away.

On the other hand your bitch might only be at the attachment stage (when the discharge seems to be seen most often) and only 18 - 21 days pregnant, as sperm can live in the bitches tract for a few days before conception.

As the second vet said wait and see.

I had a bitch get pyometra 14 days after being mated, earlier this year. It was obvious. She didn't eat, she had a discharge (too early to be a pregnancy one), she was quiet and unhappy and had a high temperature.

I had another pyometra last year, no mating involved and there the bitch was acting 100 % normal, BUT she was bleeding AND again high temperature.

It was the high temperature in both cases that really told us the most.

Her temp hasnt gone above 102.5
shes being picky with food but my thoughts are pregnancy symptoms, shes bothering my other girl to play however she does go a bit mooney after a season todays temp  was 101.8 last nights roughly the same , still drinking fine aswell

- By MamaBas [gb] Date 06.11.14 13:37 UTC
Exactly - high fever!!  Blood test?  Adding in the week or so to the end of her season, she's hardly started a pregnancy much as it is possible she's picked up an infection from the stud dog - is he a popular one???
- By Mbro [gb] Date 06.11.14 14:21 UTC
No temp eating as ive said had pyo before its not the same not a heavily used stud either
- By Mbro [gb] Date 07.11.14 11:52 UTC
Swab done now its a waiting game
- By Brainless [gb] Date 07.11.14 13:11 UTC
I hope it's as my friend found alarmist vets, with little experience of the details of canine pregnancy, alarming you.

I would like to bet that by five weeks after mating you will be able to confirm pregnancy by scan.

I hope so brainless I hope so
