The best way is to shortlist the breeds you like then visit people with those breeds to see if your brother reacts to them.

first of all, not everyone with asthma has a problem with animal fur ( i am a sppecialist in respiratory diseases, so I promise you that this is true). if you have not done so already, get a set of allergy tests done by the local clinic, which can be arranged by the doctor. this will say if dog allergy is present or not.if its not present, you could have any dog, if it is present certain dogs are less likely to provoke asthma, like poodles. i would not recommend "trying out" by going to different breeders...deliberately trigguring an attack is NOT advisable, he could end up very poorly!

Hi Pinklillies
My mum has bad asthma but has GSD AND A SHITZU , my friend has asthma and has 5 gsds and a rotty all living in ...how does the allergy thing work ??? would be interested to know :)
I'm allergic to cats and apparantly it's not their fur but a certain type of dust particle that the fur collects...

Thanks
Tracey :)

I would agree with Pinklilies. I have asthma bad enough to need two types of inhaler every day but am fine with dogs but not with cats! Different people have different triggers and it's never a good idea to deliberately expose an asthmatic to a trigger in order to guage a response, in fact it can be very dangerous. I think the cat allergy thing has something to do with a protein in the cat saliva, cats are always grooming themselves and this releases the protein on to the fur? I may be confused here but seem to remember reading this.

Hi NICKY
don't know if it's the same with you but if you walk in to a strangers house, you can tell almost immediately that they have cats...it's like an instant irritation

I believe that the cat dander can stay in the air for quite some time, most people are allergic to the dander not the animals coat.

As Pinklillies says if your brothers asthma is severe don't go seeing if he's allergic to a certain dog etc. Go and have the tests, they are quick and easy, although I presume that you already willl of had this done, you will have been told what he's actually allergic too?
