I took my girl to be mated and he just wasnt interested so i guess we were a little too early but whats puzzling his owner is he is more interested in a girl that was mated 2 weeks prior( not by him) infact he wont leave her alone and will try to mount her at every available opportunity so she has had to separate them.Im going back in 2 days but hoping this isnt going to interfere with the mating.Any ideas why he would be like this?

Actually from my experience with mine, dogs can have 'preferences'!!   One of mine, a dark tricolour, definitely preferred bicolours!!!    My bet is your bitch just isn't right on although why he's fixated with the other bitch I have no idea unless she's still giving off the 'right smell'.   Good job they have been separated.   Unless he's releasing when he's been with that other bitch, it shouldn't affect his sperm count.   Do they have another male you might at least try with your bitch to see if the problem is with her (not ready/gone over?)

Have you done Idexx? That should tell you when she is due and ready to be mated.

Not to use this other dog, but if he's an experienced stud dog, he should be able to 'tell you' whether she is right on for mating!!!   If she's only on day 9, chances are she's not - no two bitches are really the same and for sure, some are 'flirts' and sending confusing signals   LOL.

I have also found with an all bitch household bitches will often stand and flirt for each other a few days before they would give a male the time of day.

I have also found bitches that have had litters before will often be throwing themselves at a male that is fussy about correct timing about two days before he will oblige.

Does that hold true for a mixed household Brainless? I'm still a bit baffled by our failure in the spring - I used Idexx and the results said mate in 1 - 3 days. That day she was flirting like mad with my old neutered cocker, so we went down to the stud, she stayed for 3 days and only got 1 slip mating and the male then became less keen so the SDO is convinced she had already gone over when I took her, but that's not what the Idexx suggested. Need to get it right next spring as it will be our last chance before she's too old for a first litter.

The science is reliable, behaviour sadly isn't and the correlation between standing behaviour and pshiological optimum time to conceive can be way off IME

You really can't assume that her "day" will be day 9.  I've had bitches who haven't even ovulated the same day on every season.  One bitch had a litter to a day 15 mating, and 2 years later whelped after a mating on day 28 (when my vet said she couldn't possibly be pregnant.)  She had a litter to prove him wrong.

As to her flagging, I agree with Brainless, my bitches will even present themselves to each other, and end up with about 4 of them playing trains.  My best ever bitch (now spayed) always started to flag on day 3.  And she flagged to all and sundry.  But then, she was a total trollop and would flag for a camel.

Without testing I have always used my own stud dog to get it right.  Being experienced he wouldn't waste his energy if they didn't smell right.  I always felt sorry for my boy because once he had let me know it was time, I was off with the bitch to visit the stud that I had chosen.  He never got it wrong, not once.

Oooh you are so cruel!!  LOL.   But joking apart, this is often a more reliable method of getting it 'right'.   All part of the challenge that is breeding!!    The best laid plans.....

I have twice experienced that a particular dog and bitch just did not like each other, or one of them didn't. Once was a few years ago. We had travelled for 8 hours one way to a dog and he simply would not mate my bitch. Not the next day either, despite the bitch flagging like mad. We ended up with another long journey to a different dog and they mated within 5 minutes of meeting.

I have just experienced the same again, although different breed and both dogs in the same location this time. The bitch absolutely point blank refused the dog chosen for her. Eventually yesterday we swapped and used a different dog -instant result.  This despite the bitch being tried with both dogs on the SAME day, so definitely not a timing issue. As you are now allowed to do matings with two sires I tried with the first dog again today, same result -she really does not like him at all. But got another good tie with the second dog. So that's that and I'm leaving it like this. She clearly knew what she wanted.

Back in the 70's when I went to be scrutinised (to see if I was suitable for a puppy) I wanted a Toy Poodle.  The breeder/exhibitor kennels I visited had standards too.

I went into the breeders living room, and she let a load of dogs in, I found out it was to test me.  A huge standard bitch came and clamped her paws on my shoulders.  She was gorgeous.  A lovely apricot colour.  The breeder had been trying to get her mated to a lovely male of the same colour.  The bitch would not, under any circumstance allow the dog near her. 

In the end the breeder tried a different colour stud to see the reaction.  The bitch changed in an instant, and presented herself to a chocolate male.  At the time, when told that this bitch just didn't like certain boys, I thought it sounded a bit extreme.

I now know that it is very true.  No different to me not wanting to kiss a guy with a beard!  LOL

Years ago, I took my Manchester Terrier bitch to be mated by a lovely dog belonging to a vicar. My bitch refused point blank to have anything to do with him at The Rectory. I was allowed to take him to a very good mutual friend's house a few minutes drive away. We had to stop on the way to the friend's, as they had tied in the car! My bitch obviously felt it was wrong to mate while the vicar was watching!!

ROFL!!!  Thanks for the laugh.  At least she was letting the vicar know that you had brought her up properly. 

Reminds me of the first pup we ever had back in about 1975. Got her from a dogs home as an 8 week puppy from a litter of 5. We got told the background story........

Local vicar had pedigree Cocker bitch, tried about 4-5 times to mate her (not sure if she wouldn't or just never took), came home from taking a service one Sunday morning and found her tied with the black lab from 'down the road'

He tried taking the pups to dogs home at 6 weeks and was told to go back home for another 2 weeks.........they were back the day they were 8 weeks old...............think he lost his christian attitude
