Sunday night I thought my dog may have eaten a sock but didn't see him do it and can't be sure. He has eaten things before like a small soft toy and a bean bag small (which we didn't know about until it came back up about a week and half after he could have possible eaten it). It's just I caught him with a sock and then I realised he had already spent a while behind the sofa so have taken it that he had already pinched one. Don't know how many socks I put on radiator as none seem to come out in pairs! I just totally forgot I had them on there when I let him in the lounge.
Yesterday he started to cough and be sick at the same time only brininging up white thick froth but was doing it every half hour or so. Just thought the sock was irritating his tummy and would be up soon. But the sickness continued and went to a watery egg white consistency but again was doing it every half hour or so. Just sounded like him being sick.
Absolutely completely normal in himself, ate all his dinner (raw) which never got returned amongst the watery sickness, pee'd and poo'd prior to his dinner no problems.
Took him to emergency vet who said sounds like a foreign object in his tummy. He had injection to bring on vomiting which worked well but no sock!
Throughout the night I could hear him coughing being sick every so often but he did have some hours of quietness.
This morning breakfast eaten in a flash but he looks like he's had a night on the town and not so bouncy.
Never had kennel cough before and have looked it up and some symptoms could fit. His eyes are a bit stickier than normal but he always has a little bit of stickiness at times.
I just presumed with KC he would cough constantly but wouldn't make him so sick of watery fluid/froth.
Going to ring vet again this morning when open but has anyone got an inclining of which it sounds most like??

I've had 4 swallowing of foreign objects and this sound like the frothy stuff they all kept bringing up, however none of them wanted to eat and if they did the food also came up due to the block. Poo is normally unable to get through either although what he did yesterday may have been in bowel already, has he done anything today?
Did Vet not feel tummy and x-ray to look for anything unusual. If item has become lodged then just making them sick will not bring it up as it may be passed the stomach.
I would definitely go back and have him checked for a block though, hope everything goes alright.
Last froth vomit was 7.15. Ate his breakfast and has been out for an hour running around, no sickness but two big belches and a couple of coughs at beginning of walk nothing since.
Small bowl movement but solid.
Drinking ok
Vet said X-ray wouldn't show a sock and if it has now passed through all we can do is hope it comes out others end! He did say he has known dogs have things in their stomachs for weeks before it's expelled.
They vets rang me this morning to see how things were and will us anytime today if I think things are the same or getting worse.
>Vet said X-ray wouldn't show a sock and if it has now passed through all we can do is hope it comes out others end!
A sock wouldn't show up, but the telltale build-up of gas/faeces behind an obstruction in the bowel would.
Yes that would I guess but at the moment I don't think they would do it as he's really not poorly enough.
Does it sound like kennel cough?? He hasn't coughed since around 9am and that was just a couple huffs.

It sounds more like a blockage, but perhaps just enough that food is able to work past it. Having barely saved one of ours from a blockage I personally don't take chances with symptoms like that.
I do hope it's all passed and everything's fine

Our Belle was coughing a few weeks ago,as she is typical young lab always picking things up stones ect .I took her to the vet, usual vet wasn't on duty so had to agree to see the on call vet,he told my it was kennel cough.I had a feeling she had swallowed something and told the vet this but he said he he was sure it was kc.so left with antibiotics he said it would clear within 7 days,on day 5 it was worse than ever and was wretching and she coughed a stone up,wont be seeing that vet again as this cpuld of been fatal I should of gone with my gut instinct and asked for xrays.

well he's had an ok day, only coughed/huffed twice with small amount of mucous each time. interested in any food i was preparing and eager to go out with my husband just now for his walk. I'll await a report on the bowel movements!!
at least the amount of sickness has reduced dramatically from what it was this time yesterday.

Hope all goes well with your boy, they are a worry.

The cough with KC is unlike any other. I've had dogs with heart problems, and that one is distinctive too.
To me, KC reminds me of kids with whooping cough. It is what I describe as a Hacking cough. When it went through all my dogs it was my elderly Bearded Collie who suffered the most. Always coughing up mucous and bile.
Bright as button this morning, bouncy around and playing with his favourite toy.
No sickness but some sneezing when he was excited about his breakfast and a huge belch 10mins after his breaky.
His been to the toilet, small amounts and very firm, took a bit long to do but last nights was softer and easier.
I am thinking more KC as the days go on.
Hope the others don't get it, on is 13 1/2! I've given them all doses of vit C.

So glad he is ok.

If it is Kennel Cough then I wouldn't walk him at the moment. It is spread by being airborne - coughing and sneezing - and is very contagious -and although not generally a huge problem for healthy dogs it can be very serious for the very young, old dogs or those with a compromised immune system.
One of my dogs was recently in contact with a dog who then developed KC and although my dog was unaffected he was kept away from other dogs to prevent the spread of the disease.

I totally agree with Harley. It's a bit irresponsible to have a dog out and about spreading this awful thing. I have to be honest, my vet wouldn't even allow me to take a dog in with a cough (even though I knew it was a heart cough.) They told me to stay outside "just in case" and had to wait until a vet was completely ready to walk me in. As it was a Chihuahua I carried her in, but knew it was heart.
I kept all my gang in when they had KC, it wasn't fair to take them out and about.
where i live i am fortunate to be able to walk and not see another dog or person the whole time we are out plus areas are well away from mainstream dog walkers. He isn't bringing anything up now and no coughing. he really is very well and even exercise isn't affecting him.
I would not take him into the village or walk him round the streets, plus I'm guessing at it being kc. probably know next week if my others get it.
i do not think I am being irresponsible in where i take him and apart from my others he hasn't come into contact with any other dogs. The irresponsible ones are the ones that took their dogs to the show I was at last week where he probably picked it up from! This seems to happen a lot i think.
I have had more than 4 dogs for many many years and this is the first time in about 15years that any of my lot have had it, if it is it.
