Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Late coming into season - any reason for this?
- By suejaw Date 18.10.14 06:57 UTC
I've been waiting for my girl to come into season as I'm planning on mating her, she's 2 months late and still no sign at this moment in time.

She is normally very regular, every 6 months.

She was 1 month late at the beginning of the year and I mated her then but sadly she didn't take. This is the first time she's been late within her cycle and now she is late again.

Do you think that because I mated her last time this could have an effect? Just trying to find reasons as to maybe why.

I know I'm just going to have to be patient on this, which is not easy for me. I did think she was coming in last month as she always scent marks a lot before she comes in but that came to nothing.

She's waiting to make sure you end up with puppies at the most inconvenient time (Xmas/New Year). ;)

I hope it works out for you this time.

If she does come in within the week then yes it will be puppies around new year, any longer and it will mean pups in 2015

Yes I have had this, usually when you plan a mating, or they come in unexpectedly early.

In 2006 I planned a last litter from my champion bitch to a new import, and then was travelling abroad to mate her daughter.  They were due in season about 2 - 3 months apart so theory was one litter would have been reared before the other was born.

In the end they came in season 3 days apart, the older one being late by two months.  I assumed one or other might not take, especially as the older one could be a pain to get mated always wanting to play the male.

In the end Jozi stood like a dream while I was away with her daughter Lexi who was mated abroad, no problem (both had missed on previous attempt with an inexperienced male), both ended up with 7 pups (my overall average litter size has been just shy of 6, 4 - 7 most often, with a range of 3 - 9).

For my US trip Inka came in a month early during all that snow, cancelled flights and shut airports in 2010.

Typical bitches eh?

I'm going to the vets to make sure everything is ok internally as I do worry.. Lol maybe a waste of time but T least I can rule out any infection etc x

Total waste of time if there is no discharge, it's all down to the bitch timing and hormones.

I've been waiting for my girl to come into season as I'm planning on mating her, she's 2 months late and still no sign at this moment in time.

Snap! My girl was punctual to the day until I wanted to mate her this last season, and this time she kept everyone waiting for 2 months. I had planned to take her abroad on a 1500 mile trip to the south west of Poland, and I knew the dog in question was going to the WDS in August--it got to the point where I thought I'd have to cancel if she came in at that time, and I will never forget the owner saying not to worry, if that's when she comes in we will be at home for her--there are some things more important than shows. As it happened, she finally came into season at the end of August and the dog went BOS in an entry of 90, so all was well that wended well! And bless his owner for her kindness--not many people would do that.

And our first litter is now due in just 2 more weeks! Eek!

Good luck with that Jay and hope to see some photos of them :-)

Let's hope we don't have to wait for too much longer... Said to stud owner can just see it coming to her needing to be mated on Xmas day, lol... Contrary is her middle name, well one of them

Contrary is her middle name

I thought it was an essential requirement in every bitch's job description :-)

Now suejaw, this is where you are going wrong.  :-)  :-)  :-)

You are expecting for simple answers, where there are none.

Oh, and did you know that by the time you get the longed for litter, you will have wrinkles and grey hair.  No matter that you are not old enough, or not ready for them.  It is the way they punish you.  And you have admitted that you find it difficult to be patient.  (Shakes head.)  There you have it.  :-)

Haha Jean love it.....

I just thought there might be something logical I'm missing, clearly not... Lol

Maybe it is, then she fits in well.

I've just entered a show with her this winter, missed so many as thought she'd be in August

I'd tend to agree - she KNOWS you want to mate her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    As for Christmas litters - we had one, 9 puppies whelped on Christmas Eve.   Actually that was one of the BEST Christmas holidays we'd had for years - snow on the ground outside (Canada) and us all snuggly warm indoors 'doing puppies'.    Brilliant.   it does tend to put a crimp in any festive get-togethers but we had none so..... all good.

Perfect excuse for me to avoid the family if that were the case... Haha

I'm going to get her swabbed for any infection just in case, it needs to be done anyway at the request of the stud dog owner.. If she holds on much longer after that then yes I'll have to do it again..
- By Brainless [gb] Date 19.10.14 08:29 UTC
We had a Christmas day litter.

As she was taking her time my hubby told me to take the other dogs out for a god walk.

On return I found him with the first pup in one hand, a ladle from making a rather late Christmas dinner gravy in the other and the phone tucked under his chin giving a blow by blow account to one f our good friends who had been checking on progress.

Yes it was great excuse to avoid family gatherings.

My girl who is very regular came in a month early and spoiled all the plans this autumn, I've have ended up with 9 week puppies at Christmas if I'd mated her, nightmare!! Avoiding family festivities not an option as apparently 'they're just dogs'. :-)

Had one late as well, just in season now, and I can see Christmas dinner being cancelled this year!
- By suejaw Date 19.10.14 17:57 UTC
Can see a Xmas day mating if she continues in her contrary ways too... Lol stud owner happy with this if be the case ;-)
