I've kept my first male Papillon and although he is still a puppy and this isn't a problem yet, I want to avoid the urine staining I see on many adult male Pap's in the ring!
I want to avoid the really strong whitening shampoos if possible - what would work instead?
Advice would be great! Thanks!

Bathing once or even twice a week I would say, gentle shampoo and conditioner. I also find it necessary because otherwise you get such a strong urine smell you won't want the dog in your lap! Bitches are so much easier. I can smell my male Pap right now as he is stood behind my chair -and he was last bathed one week ago exactly. Got to get him in the bath again today.

Products like ' The Stuff' and 'SeabreezeOil' ...coat the hair shaft and, if applied on a clean white coat, will protect it from the absorption of urine.
But I agree with Marianne..nothing keeps a dog whiter than washing off the urine.
My white mini has a habit of putting his leg down while still weeing so gets wee on the inside of his leg. He needs a rinse or leg wash quite often to stop the smell. He hasn't got staining.
Shampoo wise I've just started using animology white wash. It does bring him up white.

I used 'The Stuff' on my Henry and it certainly helped a lot, but I still had to wash his tummy and front leg feathering every few days, he was a messy little dog!
I have seabreeze oil - I just don't like the greasy look and feel :(
How long does the staining actually take to set in? I think I would prefer to bath him twice a week if that would be all it took to stop staining, he loves digging so he will probably need it anyway.

I've had a few people tell me that Ice on Ice is actually better than The Stuff in terms of helping with urine staining as you can actually leave it in the coat without causing damage, unlike The Stuff which really needs to be washed out.
TRIED THEM ALL cant see any difference i think the only way to get rid of urine stain is to cut the feathering off bit by bit and constant cleaning after they wee and spray with a protective conditioner !
