I haven't been on the site in a while as my iPad was nicked on my way home one night. I have missed CD so much. It has been a summer of highs and lows. I enrolled my shih tzu in puppy foundation and despite being told that shih tzu's were "a bit thick" she was the only one to graduate.  She also won 3rd in a local fun dog show. I am pathetically proud of her. She is so smart and has changed the views of all the trainers at puppy class.

I may have mentioned I was a bit worried about her eyes as they were very weepy from about 4.5 months on. I read a thread which said it could be teething i tried to get it checked at the vets which led to the whole pressure to spay her. I changed vets and have found a great chap locally who was recommended by my previous vet when I had my first shih tzu. She has entropien which he is monitoring until she is fully grown as they don't want to operate and then maybe have to do it again. I am very happy with the new vet who was in total agreement with waiting to spay her and emphasised that it is a partnership.

She also decided it was a good idea to eat a conker 2 weeks ago at the park whilst working her on a long line. I was sure I had read they were toxic and sure enough she soon became very poorly throwing up. We rushed her to the vet and they gave her an injection to make her vomit. Thankfully she made a full recovery! She still has a long way to go as far as certain habits - biting (only me!) and hanging off trousers / slippers but she is really getting there and I am loving every minute of her. She is so gentle with other dogs and kids and is a fearless little thing - the terrier Derby didnt faze her and she loved the beach adventuring into the sea (just up to her knees mind)I just hope she continues to stay this confident. She is hitting 7 months now and absolutely stunning.

Just to say if the Entropion is mild as the face and head develops they can often grow out of it, so your vet taking the conservative option, and I assume advising you apply lacrilube or similar to lubricate and protect the eye, you may avoid surgery.

I would suggest you let the breeder know so they can adjust their breeding program (not put the same or similar pedigrees together in future and monitor to ensure there are no other affected pups).  A breeder can only take action if they are aware of any issues.

Thanks Brainless

I think this is the vets view. He hasn't given lacrlube just an eye / face solution. I rang him as I was a bit concerned and he rang back. He said as there is no sign of irritation he didn't deem it necessary to have a lubricant. I asked why were her eyes streaming if they aren't irritated and he said that the slight roll of the eyelid compromises the function of the tear duct so her eyes aren't draining properly but spilling over.  Like u said he is hoping for some correction when she is fully grown.

I have let the breeder know as we are in contact anyway

In my limited experience shih tzus aren't thick at all, they can be pretty stubborn however! I imagine to train them you have to gently persuade them that it was their idea all along! :-D
