I have a 7 year old daschund named Teddy. I don't know what he did however he is unable to walk and is paralised in the back end. What may have caused this? Is there hope other than surgery?

Hello Amber777, I have three dachsies at present. I've had three in the past with back problems. One was just a minor problem (no paralysis), she was fine after some cage rest and anti inflammatorys. Both of the others however became paralised. In my experience, the only option when it's gone that far is surgery, because the ruptured disc in the back needs removing. The disc ruptures which then causes pressure on the spinal cord, which leads to paralysis. The quicker you catch it the better. I personally would advise you to speak to a specialist about this. You have obviously been to the vets already.
As for your question into what has caused this, it could have been anything, just turning the wrong way or too quickly, jumping up or down. I personally believe it has a lot to do with breeding.
Good luck to you both. I've been there and i know what you're going through.
I know of an excellent specialist in Northumberland, if it helps.
