Hi Emma,
I'm afraid I know nothing about breeding, but I just wanted to send best wishes and good luck!!
Love Nicola
xx
As long as she's not in distress I'd wait a bit before taking her to the vet.Rather than leaving her to rest take her out for a little run ,not too far obviously .I usually run mine round the garden a couple of times. If she can't run then just a brisk walk.Is she still drinking ok???Try a little glucose drink to give har a bit of an energy boost. In my cavalier book it says it's not abnormal for then to go 65 or 66 days

If you are concerned call your vet straight away. People here can offer you their personal opinions, but you are the one looking at your dog. If you are at all concerned call now.
By the way if you do not have faith in your vet ,why are you still with him???Is it because there isn't another nearby??If you are concerened that your vet is fobbing you off which I'm sure is not the case then why don't you seek a second opinion.Sorry I'm not having a go I'm just offering advice.Better safe than sorry after all !!!

i had no concerns about our vet until after i mated poppy....before i took her to the stud i had her checked by our vet who gave us the all clear,he never mentioned heart, hip, eye tests being done and i didnt realise they needed to be done at the time...thats why i sed i had lost faith in him...there are lots of vets practices in our area many closer to home than ours is emma x

Hi Emma,
As has been said before, vets are very good at what they do - which is dealing with sick animals. They aren't experts at dog (or cat, or anything else) breeding unless that happens to be their hobby too. They often don't know a great deal about healthy animals either - as these aren't the ones they get to see!
If you have any concerns about your bitch - how many days is it now from her last mating? - please get the vet to check her over. Better safe than sorry. Good luck - keep us informed. :)

Hi,
Hope all is OK, and she sounds reasonably content and not as if she's giving cause for concern, but I'd probably still get her checked.
A brush-off from the vet and an unnecessary bill I can live with (not that I'm insinuating money is a concern for you), but a problem I could have avoided is another story. For peace of mind you'll relax more if you get a professional to look her over and reassure you, and will be in a fit state to enjoy your puppies when they arrive :).

Betty please take the dog to the vet even if the vet checks her over and says everything is alright. That will put your mind at rest, and you will know mum and pups are fine.

Date 11.02.03 22:01 UTC
she had 5 by the way 2 blen 3 tri....and everyones ok!
Glad to hear they're all ok Emma :-)
Hope Poppy's ok soon.
Glad there`re all OK :)
Christine, Spain.

At least they're all okay :D How many boys/girls? I had a c-section too, and needed to sleep for ages, then all was fine. Her problem is that she can't remember having them, so she doesn't know where they've come from! I'm sure her instincts will start to kick in as soon as the anaesthetic wears off properly. Good luck - I bet they're beautiful. :)

I hope all is well and given time she will get used to the puppies.
I had the same problem with a bitch last 16 months ago but after a long 4 days sitting with her, encouraging her, and helping the puppies she soon showed some interest and went on to be a very good mum.xxxxx
good luck fingers crossed

Let her sleep Betty and make sure that the pups are warm. What guidance has your Vet given youfor Poppy and the puppies?

Betty
Sorry to hear about the C section, one of my bitches was exactly the same last year (No contractions at all, and like Poppy fully dilated) but as already said in an earlier post, patience and re-assuring Poppy she'll get the hang of it once the drugs wear off. It took me about 6 hours, and mum then grasped the idea and there was no looking back, washing and feeding them like there was no tomorrow :-)
Fingers crossed for everybody, and glad the babies and mum are doing well :-)
Hugs
Karen

I had the same thing happen 18 months ago, the bitch went over time spent 48 hours in onoff first stage labour, and Oxytocin failed to work and she had a C section.
What I have found with the two C sections that I have, is that it can effect the milk production/efficient suckling by the pups due to the drugs in their system.
If the pups do not gain weight after the second day then you may have to help them a bit.
In the book of the bitch there is a chzrt showing puppy statistics, including how much food they need per pound of body weight. I have found that topping up the pups if they fail to gain initially at half their actual liquid needs gives them the strength to keep going, and time for the bitch's milk to come in.
I lost one of the pups at 5 days, as it wouldn't take supplementation, but the others made good progress. I didn't increase the amount of the supplement, allowing the slack to be taken up, by the bitches milk supply coming in, and phased them out altogether once they were gaining well, and were gulping the milk down!
I had noticed the same thing with a previous C section, but in their case they started gaining without me intervening, but did stand still for a couple of days.

Bettyboop,
U can't be upset with ur vet because they should of known about the tests for ur breed. U should have known about all the tests ur breed needed before u ever bred ur bitch. That is something u ask ur breeder and go to ur vet to have done.
Glad to hear that she is doing great and so are the pups, but if the pups have not eaten in about 4 hours u do want to bottle feed them because they do need to eat (about every 2 to 3 hours). Has her milk droped? The oxytosin shot will help bring down her milk (if she went into labour her milk should be down) u could put the pups on her and hold them their so they can get a drink. To see if she has milk u can squeeze her nipples to see if any come out. Also if she does not have any interest in them right now make sure u are wiping their bottoms to stimulate them to go to the bathroom.
Good luck :)

hi all thanx for all the best wishes, poppy is a bit overwhelmed at the mo,like you said she doesnt no where they came from! she like ive just had this big op and you chuck all these babies on me....the vet advised me to help with feeding etc so ive been bottle feeding the three bigger ones so the little 2 can get abit more milk from mum. shes warming a little bit now not much cleaning but shes definatly interested in them and doesnt want to go oout etc...i think her prob is she just doesnt no what to do with them. she doesnt mind them i think shes just knackered and soo thin it breaks my heart :(
thepuppys are absolutly beautiful and seem to be doing well,im just a bit confused about getting them to go...every feed once a day? i guess the vet will tell me anyway...
so yeah not quite how we planned it but were a happy (and tired!) little brood.
our katie has fell head over heels in luv, she jus sits next to them going "baby shh fast asleep!" bless
emma x
p.s any tips are soo welcome!!

Hi Emma
You need to Poo & pee the babies after every meal, get yourself some cotton wool and a bowl of warm water, soak the cotton wool in the warm water, and gentle wipe across the babies bottoms until you get results, this will eventually stimulate the puppy to Poo, what I found was when I did the bottom end, they wee'd at the same time :-)
I've just hand reared a baby and know exactly how you feel :-) but its all worth it in the end Emma :-)
Glad to hear Poppy is taking a little more interest in you babies now, she'll get the hang of it real soon.
Best of luck and hugs to those babies

As said before you need to make thep pee and poop. Also, the pups' nursing release some hormones so the more they nurse the more she'll get to realize what it's about and start mothering.
You need to be sure they suckle efficiently, sometimes when they're weak (from the anesthesia for instance) they look like they nurse but they don't. So you need to hold the nipple an get them to nurse untill you see / feel in your hand that the suckling works.
