I was advised by someone to spray my lab with a water gun whenever I see him doing something bad (eating poop and jumping on people are his two biggest downfalls). What does everyone think about this? Has anyone ever tried this? I know that he absolutely HATES being sprayed in the face with water (we have to be very careful when bathing him). I just don't want to make him afraid of me, and therefore get angry with me. Thoughts?

Hi Sammy

Don't know about water gun but Deter tablets have stopped my puppy eating his own poo most of the time. It's taken longer than the two weeks it suggest on the packet but it seems to be working now and I'm not so put off with him giving me a kiss! :D I got the tablets from Pets at Home shop for about £4.

Unfortunately, he eats other dogs, not his own. The only reason this is unfortunate is because it's more difficult to stop!

It works well for me, and they aren't frightened, just find it most unpleasant to have it sprayed in their face. They shut their wyes as soon as they see me pick up the bottle!

I've used this method for about 4-5 years with my two girls. They hate being sprayed, but they're not afraid of me or of the water gun. Savannah will get sprayed for something and go 'oh - water' and although she hates the spray she will immediately come over and have a lick of the gun and a drink out of it. I spray the water into my hand and she drinks it. Go Figure!!

Buy a Jif Lemon and fill that with water ..it is small enough to hide in your hand ...be quick when you spray him and he will not realise that YOU are actually doing it ....then you dont run the risk of him getting angry at you

We use the water trick in the garden when the girls have their Charlie Dimmock heads on and if there is a plant in the mouth or a sign of digging they get it ! It works wonders and they get a bath at the same time !

A couple of my Spanish Water Dogs think that it's great fun to have the water sprayed at them and unfortunately it hasn't deterred them, but I have seen it work on other dogs:D
