I have an 8 month old  puppy,i got her when she was 6 month old and she had a very quiet bark almost hoarse but apart from that was the picture of health.A couple of weeks ago i noticed she was retching and coughing especially while out on walks and having had other dogs with kennel cough in the past this is what i thought it was but today she has been very lethargic although still eating but she seems to choke when she drinks and something just isnt right. She has the vet tommorrow and ive contacted her breeder to ask if her previous vet had ever noticed anything but i havent heard back yet.I am now pretty certain its not kennel cough it sounds very sore almost like she is desperately trying to to bring something up,her horse bark is getting worse its almost on existent.when she first arrived in the uk my own vet didnt seem too concerned she couldnt bark but she wasnt choking or retching back then.Any ideas as to what this could be,im so worried.

With KC they do get a very, very sore throat.  I'm not surprised she's hoarse bless her. And she's been suffering for a couple of weeks now.  Seems an awful long time for a youngster to have to wait for a vet check.

Of course, it could be something more sinister (heart problems.)  But it certainly sounds more like KC.

Could be kennel cough but if she has been hoarse since you got her she could either have damaged her vocal cords by barking too much in the past (happened to one of mine) and if she is prone to choking then I'd be asking the vet to check for laryngeal paralysis as that does change the tone of the bark and makes the dog prone to choking. Could be a combination of several things of course.

She has been to a vet when she first arrived in the uk,she was not ill then just ad a very muffled bark, vet did not seem concerned but last couple of weeks i called the vet and they have put it down to kennel cough and gave me a few suggestions ie munuka honey etc but i know in my heart its not kennel cough she is seeing a vet again this afternoon,i just wanted some advice until them because im so worried.I did thin it could be laryngeal paralysis,if its this in such a young dog would that be genetic? x

Not necessarily, it could be caused by nerve damage to a young puppy. This can happen due to a knock to the skull or neck trauma.

I've actually had one with tonsilitis resulting in having to have them removed.   Could be similar, but rather than guessing, you'd be best to wait for the vet to examine her, and advise.   If you don't get a diagnosis, or trust your vet, you are entitled to go for a second opinion, or switch vets.

Coughing can be caused by a number of problems from a heart condition, to lung worm, or heartworm and yes, KC or tonsilitis.   Guesses!!

My last dog developed Laryngeal paralysis when she was elderly. Her bark changed to a much higher pitched bark rather then becoming gruff. She also became breathless quite easily.

As you say she is from abroad has she possibly been 'debarked' as dogs that have this done have a hoarse bark that doesn't carry.
