I am taking in a dog that isn't liking to gait at the moment, head to the floor and moving very slowly unless its dragged and checked. I prefer to use positive forms of training and have tried tasty treats, high pitched voice, talking to the dog all the way round and even a toy, has anyone got any ideas on how to make gaiting more fun for the dog? or what have you done for a dog that is slow and tends to pace?
iv got about 6 weeks to perfect this :)

Are you sure there is no structural reason for her movement? Will she do it propperly when out on walks. Also check her teeth, the one time mine played up and was going slow she had broken a tooth so the lead up high was bothering her.
Mines a bugger for keeping her head down on the move. I tryed a shorter lead so she had to hold her head up but she would fight it and choke so I stopped. I did try holding food down to her face, toy, talking but as soon as we started around the ring down went the head, as soon as we left the ring back up went the head on the move so there was nothing structurally wrong causing it. I went out and brought a lurcher/greyhound/whippet coller for her so she wouldnt choke on a short lead. It worked perfectly, she fought it a bit but gave up after a few steps. Hoping that once she gets use to keeping her head up again I can go back to her old collar.

the dog moves lovely when it wants to, and bounds no problems when with other dogs, to be fair she is more of a dogs dog then a peoples dog. Im not too fussed that her head is down as my breed this is quite common its the pacing and slow speed that I'm really trying to correct and for the dog to look less miserable lol.

For pacing, there are two things that we find works. (I have a bitch VERY prone to pacing, but she's now on 2 CCs and 3 RCCs so we are managing to get her moving properly.) Either move as fast as you only can -if she is moving fast she will not pace, especially if you set off fast. Works best when there is nobody in front of you to slow you down, and the ring needs to be a decent size. The other thing that works is turning her in a circle before setting off. That is the only way that works in a big class or in the group we find, as there are too many dogs around you to go at great speed.

Could it be that she just doesn't enjoy showing?

Thankyou very much Alysce, I downloaded that book last night and have tried the clicker training today and it has made a world of difference, she is 100% better already after just one training session she looks like she actually is enjoying herself, holds her head up, stopped pacing, stretches out and wags the whole time.
I just needed to find out what this dog was really into and it seems the clicker is the answer
Thankyou once again

Suejaw the dog is only a young puppy and hasn't been out yet, I just needed to find what type of training she responds to and thankfully this seems to be the answer.. at last.. Yay!

Brilliant you found what works. Didn't realise only a puppy so my comment doesn't come into it being bored ;-) xx
