Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Females scent markng?

I've allways wondered this, why are some females into scent marking like a male dog would be?
Mines a big scent marker on walks and she has had a few pissing contests with males dogs befor and had her head peed on many times trying to get to where a dog is peeing while their still peeing to mark over it.

My young dog, now spayed, has just started doing this. Prior to that she was having one maybe two big wee's when out for a walk. Now it's sniff, sniff, sniff and a quick curtesy over a particular spot. It was quite amusing watching her early attempts at scent marking as she would suddenly stop and do a drip or two, but not have a clear idea why she was doing it.

When I had two dogs, the younger one always pee'ed over the older ones wee. If my SIL's dog was with us, a sort of queue would form as my older dog wee'ed closely followed by younger dog, then SIL's dog.

My middle girl, though usually a complete soppy wuss, is the one who always wees over the patch of grass if a visiting dog has weed in the garden. At least she doesn't cock her leg which I always think looks ridiculous in girls! :-D

>scent marks coming up to season

Thanks interesting. I wonder if the sudden scent marking from my girl is to do with seasons. Although just spayed, she probably would have been due a season about now

it does seem to be a learnt skill doesn't it, when mine first started doing it she would sniff the pee then just squat where she was standing so she wasn't actualy marking over it. Once she finnaly realised she would take ages trying to line up right to pee on top. now she can do it easerly lol.

suejaw, mine started doing it just befor her first season too then didn't do it as much after until near her second season but for some reason decided to keep doing it after that.

LucyDogs, an old nabours girl use to lift her leg when she squatter it looked very strange lol. I wanted a male orignaly and I often say ive got the worse bits of both sexes the marking of a male and the seasons of the female, perhaps I shouldn't have told her I wanted a boy lol

Seasons are one reason, and confidence is another - but it can be from both angles (both being and not being confident)!

My old girl Opi was of the confident variety - she was matriarch here, very sure of herself (but not bolshy, just a proper calm, level-headed dog).  But River, while she shows a lot of similar behaviour to Opi, is the opposite - very lacking in self-assurance so she scent marks over other dogs' wees to an almost obsessive degree in a bid to make herself look confident and like she knows what she's doing.  My oldie Tia used to do the same thing too.

Ah now that's very interesting and could well explain why it's mainly Hetty that does it, as she is definitely the least confident of my three in most situations. Unless you offer her a lap to sit on, then she's your friend for life!

From experience with mine, they will 'spread it around' when in, or coming into season.   Otherwise much as some of mine would 'lift a leg' (sometimes where my males didn't because they knew they'd never reach the heights of other dogs!), they didn't mark.
