Topic Dog Boards / Health / overgrowth of yeast in lip folds

Anyone got any tips on how to deal with this please? Finlay has suffered from this for a few months now & also had a pseudomonas infection just to add to the excitement. We have got rid of the pseudomonas (I think) but I wondered if there is anything better than washing his chin & lip folds with Malacetic shampoo every day.

If you're certain that the pseudomonas infection has gone, you could try the remedies mentioned in this thread

Tea Tree is known to have anti bacterial and anti-fungal properties :-D

Thanks for that. Will give it a try - is tea tree safe to give round the mouth?
- By Dill [gb] Date 22.08.14 19:10 UTC
I wouldn't use it neat ;-)

Friend used the cream with no problems :-)

I'm not so sure Tea Tree is safe for dogs?    I do know that Malaseb works with yeast infections, BUT I'd advise you use it well diluted as it has made my Bassets quite red when bathed using this.

Try smearing dentisept paste on - you can get it online .

If it is yeast infection then this is thrush and you can get something called nystatin which is the oral treatment for in the mouth. Not sure you can buy over the counter but what about canestan cream??

Has he been checked for diabetes? Think this can cause yeast infections especially if you can't get rid of it.

Agree with both comments lorripop. Also might be worth looking at diet as sugars aka carbs can increase the likehood of yeast infection. A low carb / grain free kibble or raw may be the way to go if you arnt there already.
Be careful with tea tree I know its toxic to cats not sure about dogs

Thanks for everyones comments. I am about to change him over to a raw diet (when I get back from holiday). At the moment he has chicken wings or duck necks for breakfast with a grain free kibble in the evening. My other dog has allergies so it will probably suit him better as well. I'm also trying a tea tree ointment made especially for dogs & I have heard that coconut oil is good so I'm looking into that.

Apple cider vinegar mixed with water helps control yeast infection and will not harm him if ingested.

Also you could try colloidal silver...again harmless if he licks it off but more expensive than the acv

Hi I have a gorgeous 3yr old Boxer boy who has been suffering from a yeast skin infection. Given antibiotics then a follow up was given Malaseb  shampoo to use. Twice a week for two wks then once a week for two wks and so on. That cost me about £90+. Then yesterday I had to take him again as his face was in a bit of a state. I thought it was from being on the beach and getting sand in his creases then scratching himself. Been told he has a skin infection on his face. That it could be a bacterial mite or some other mite as well. Has been given two weeks of Rilexine antibiotics. Three pipettes of Stronghold 240mg. And 600mg of Hibiscrub solution. That lot along with the first consultation was £95.08. Cannot afford to go back to the vet again. Do you think the cider vinegar would solve his problems. He's only been on the antibiotics a day and a half and already his poo is getting sloppy.

Poor boy,

It is possible the anti biotics are actually flaring up the yeast overgrowth also the Hibiscrub can dry the skin so could also aggravate.

If he were mine I would try the cider vinegar (dilute it), if you can afford the colloidal silver I have found it wonderful for all skin infections.

I would also give ainsworths Homeopathy a call.......they give advice over the phone and advice and a remedy will cost you about £20. Homeopathy is very effective for skin conditions.

This seems to be the time of year for contact allergies and may be worth looking at his diet as this can aggravate yeast infections,

Whatever you do, don't stop the antibiotics without your vet's express permission.
