Im cosidering buying a pup  a future stud but only if  he carries the correct colours ( chocolate ) .The sire has been colour tested and although has chocolate a couple of generations back he does not carry it,neither does a sibling of his.The mother has not been colour tested but also has chocolate in her background.Is there a chance the pup might carry it and how old can they be to dna test for that? My plan is to eventually keep a liver pup from my girl for the ring so the pup i buy has to carry for it .I should also add the sire of this pup only has chocolate on one side of his pedigree( sires side) his mothers side has none .

If you are DNA testing it can be done at any age from birth if you are using cheek swabs.

If the pups arent weaned wouldnt that mean the dna from mum would be in pups mouth? x

It's a risky business to buy in a dog as a potential stud for your bitch(es). The chances are that he won't be the best possible mate for your girl(s) and then you have the temptation to use him anyway ... If the colour is that important to you, wouldn't you be safer to look for a stud of that colour - or am I being too simplistic. Have to say that colour is right at the bottom of my list of priorities when I breed (and we do have a range of colours from light wheaten to red wheaten)

He ticks all the first priority boxes first,id absolutely love a puppy from this litter but not just for colour reasons but i have always wanted a choc and from my girl and a pup from this litter,that would be a dream come true providing there was a pup suitable but yes i could go else where if it were just for the colour but fr the quality nd colour id love one from this litter

Not to me you aren't!!   Fact is although I did this (actually I did it all the wrong way round, not anticipating what would happen - bought 2 males, 10 months apart, and then once I got into showing the second, went on to wanting a foundation bitch ......).   I imported one from the UK to compliment my second male's bloodlines but as time went on, by the time she was of age to breed (and had her Canadian title btw, as did my second male) I'd learnt enough to realise that she wasn't right for him and went to an outside stud dog.   Another fact - if you buy in a male, chances are he'll quickly become 'a passenger' as he can only be bred to your first bitch, not any daughter you might decide to keep - and you probably will keep something from their first litter.  

I've not had to bother about colour (other than personal preference) but I'd too agree that you'd be far safer to use an outside stud dog, of the colour you want.

You are meant to do it x amount of minutes after the pup last suckled. (Not sure how many without looking it up.) Just like you mustn't do it with an adult that has just eaten food.

Unless you are already established. I imported a male dog this year. I have 3 bitches he can be used on and am planning a litter next year where a daughter could also go to him in future, and he is pretty much unrelated to every bitch in the country. Doesn't mean I WILL use him on all those bitches, but the possibility is there. It's all about numbers and planning at times. I'd never buy a male dog if he could only be used on one bitch of my own. Much better to go out to stud!

As the sire doesnt carry choc you would need the mother to carry it for the pup to be a carrier. If she does carry it the pup has a 50/50 chance of also being a carrier but if she is like the sire and doesn't carry it he will also not carry it.

It may be easyer to just have the mother tested first as if she is not a carrier none of the pups will be so no point in testing the whole litter.

Is your girl choc or a carrier?
