After a 3yr break from shows I have a new pup coming out soon I have been told that there is a 'new' ruling regarding a identity tag on crates at shows but cant fid anything to tell me what is required exactly?

At unbenched shows you need to identify the cage, incase of an emergency ie your dog is in distress. This can be as easy or as difficult as you want.
The simple thing is dog/s ring number on the day, which can then looked up in the catalogue.
I made my own with a post card with my name & affix then laminated it, punched a hole in the top & secure it to my cage with a large safety pin.
You can purchase a wide range of similar things, at a range of costs.

You can get a pack of tie-on luggage labels; cheap as chips and all you need do is write your name and ring number on it.

I thought I read in a recent benched schedual that you have to lable crates even at benched shows. As ring numbers "shouldn't be used for any other purpose". I just have a laminated card with my contact details and my husbands (so we know at least one person has a working phone, and I drag him along to every show anyway :) )

I've never quite understood this rule. Since the rules say that dogs shouldn't be left unattended, then why do they need additional identification? And it's only cages that need it, not if the dog is just sat on the bench. So what's the point?!

Im guessing its because people might pick up a crate and a dog and move it around? (Not sure why anyone would want to, but guessing they are trying to cover their backs as people sue for all sorts these days!) Then if the dog in the crate had any problems you would be able to find the owner even if it had been moved/bench number taken ect. And not all people follow the "do not leave dogs unattended rule" personally I do as Im horrendously superstitious - but many do.

This is to stop the bench number being taken off the bench & put on a cage in an outside area.
There are 2 numbers at a General champ show  The bench number remains on the bench at all times, the ring number is worn by the exhibitor/handler.
I expect you have seen..on a nice day..lots of folk with cages outside & they need to be identified so if need be the owner can be contactable. Otherwise how do the officials know whose dog in a cage belongs to who?
If the dog is on the bench, wether it is chained or caged, the officials knows by the bench number who the dog belongs to..or they should.

But they still require identification on the crate. Even if the crate is fastened to the bench which has the ring number above it!
