Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / How much mince to give 9wk old puppy?
- By Dungonnell [gb] Date 23.08.14 16:41 UTC
Hello

Could someone please give me some idea of how much mince to mix with kibble for my 9wk old puppy.
I was thinking 'visually' 50 grams of mince looks ok for a cocker spaniel puppy tummy.
Would this seem too little or too much?
Thank you :)
Caroline

I'm a bit confused as to why you want to add mince to kibble? I'd simply give one or the other, not both in the same meal.

I used to mix just a VERY SMALL amount of lean raw mince with the kibble (complete, good quality puppy food) for my Basset puppies, also scrambled egg (not in the same meal) but it was literally a tiny amount- probably no more than a tablespoonful mixed in - too much and you'll alter the make-up of the puppy kibble.   It should be just 'for interest'.

Ok thanks for that.

Many raw feeders believe you can cause digestive problems and even risk illness by feeding kibble and raw together, as they are digested at different rates.

http://dogsdinner2.webs.com/quickstartguide.htm have a look here in the puppy section. are you intending to bring them up on raw or kibble ? I agree with beaglebaggie raw and kibble arnt advised to be fed together not just in the same meal but at all.I know many who would argue they have always done it and had no problems.
I would make a choice between bringing a dog up on raw or on kibble not both. If kibble personally I would go grain free  there are quite a few around now. They may look expensive at first but the amount s you feed are often less but my overall choice is 100% raw

Interestingly this past weekend, having bought a couple of lamb marrow bones, I gave them to my two (the weather was nice enough for them to have them outside!).   That night, my Whippet threw up bile, and during the evening that day, my Basset was clearly uncomfortable to the point we took him out for a walk where he dumped quite a 'pile', starting okay and not at the end (great for picking up - not!).   Both were fine the following day.  I'd suspect this probably was the result of the bones!!   However, in truth I've never had this reaction before when I have given others the occasional bone (not again with these two!) so there may be some truth in not mixing raw with a complete diet?   BUT with my puppies I always started them on goats milk, to teach them to lap, and a very tiny amount of raw lean mince once a day.   And as said, continued to mix just a very small amount with their puppy kibble (just one of the daily meals) - again with absolutely no problems.   I am aware that raw feeders say not to mix the two however.

Lamb marrow bones (assuming they are legs) aren't something I would feed my seasoned raw fed dogs. Though some do. They're weight bearing and are more dense and tend to splinter. Lamb rib bones are better, but the trouble with bones is that they require a very acidic stomach, usually a raw fed dog's stomach acid is more appropriate for dealing with them, as the stomach is adjusted to working harder to break down the bone, if you like. There is no hard evidence to show not to feed raw and kibble, it just makes sense not to :)

My large dogs (9 of the 10 Malinois, 2 crossbreeds, 1 Golden Retriever) get fed raw both meals at the weekend and whenever my husband is at home, but when I feed them, they get CSJ. I can't do with all the blood and visible body parts etc (I'm a vegetarian and can't even watch people eat chicken), it's bad enough having to feed it to the one Mali who cannot tolerate anything but raw, so the way it works out for us is that these dogs are normally fed 9 meals of raw and 5 meals of CSJ during a typical week. That will include a couple of meals of raw meaty bones. (The Papillons are easier for me to feed as they get complete raw frozen blocks from Natures Menu, I can cope with that -but it would cost too much to feed the big dogs on them as well and we get huge quantities of meat and bones from the butcher for next to nothing.) I have had no problems with this whatsoever and have fed this way for several years now -think it must be 5 or 6. However I never mix the two in the SAME meal.

I've never given lamb marrow bones before - it was just on offer in Morrisons!!   Mine normally have either the big marrow bones (cow?) or rib bones.   I did remove from both the moment I saw splintering beginning as I'm 'aware' LOL.   I think you are right on the money re the stomach acid which is clearly what my Whippet threw up - bile.    As I said, mine rarely have bones, just as a treat and only when they can have them outside (not on the carpets thank you).  Thanks for the input anyhow.

mine are all raw fed but I avoid any kind of marrow bones. I learned that one the hard wayr early on in raw feeding, my gsd chipped a tooth on one so they are now a no no. They have ribs and carcasses which are softer

I feed lamb leg and shoulder bones occasionally and I have never had problems as well as trotters with a reasonable amount if shin on.

They don't have them that often as prefer to give beef ribs or lamb ribs if I can get them. They are all fed  from the freezer which does make them chew the bone down a lot more than from fresh .

I never mix kibble with raw as only feed kibble when either I don't have any fresh raw or could be bothered to go done to the garage to get some frozen raw especially if it is peeing it down with rain as it is risen the drive !
