Topic Dog Boards / Health / Vanguard 7 Vaccine
- By bucksmum [gb] Date 15.08.14 21:08 UTC
Hi all,

I have just had a puppy returned to me as the new owners have found him too bold and lively (long story). He has had his first vaccine which was the Vanguard 7 and I need to find a vet that uses this make for his second vaccine.

I am in Cornwall and nowhere near here uses the Vanguard 7....I am prepared to travel for him as I really don't want him to have to start his course again and have more vaccinations than necessary....Does anyone have a vet that uses this brand?

Thankyou
Ali

I believe Vet4Pets chain of Veterinary Surgeries use this brand of vaccine. They have several Surgeries in Cornwall, try searching their website for the nearest to you and give them a call to see if they stock Vanguard.

I'm in N.Cornwall but sorry, I can only tell you that neither vet here in Bude, uses that .... my original one uses Nobivac and currently Canigen.   Might your own vet get some Vanguard in?   I realise it's better to use the same make - but would it make THAT much difference - talk to them?

If your not in favour of unnecessary vaccination I would not use this product, it is one of the vaccines that anecdotally has caused reactions in dogs of people I know (the other is Duramune).

There is absolutely no reason that the pup would need to start from scratch if the first vaccine contained the vaccine for the things you wish to have protected against.

I don't part vaccinate any puppy as I know often do insist on restarting the course.

As long as there is under four weeks since the first shot, then simply just have one full one done, especially if pup is over 12 weeks old, as for the viral components for most dogs one would be enough anyway, if the immune system is mature enough (normally over 12 weeks).

Just insist you only want one.

Thankyou so much for the replies.

That is very interesting that they do not need the same vaccine......so if I sold the puppy to somebody who did not have a vet that used Vanguard 7 they should be ok to use a different type of vaccine that their vet stocks? Am so against re starting so this would be a relief.

So just to clarify if he has had a vanguard 7 at 8 weeks he could have a Nobivac or Duramune for his second at 10 weeks if that is what his new vet used?

Thankyou all,

Ali

They don't need to have same brand, but vets insist on doing it, unless of course you insist they do not double up.

It's all about if there was an issue which vaccine manufacturer would get the blame.

A friend in Scotland presented her vet with al the science and he ended up agreeing to only give one jab to her pup at 12 weeks, as she didn't want the lepto, and having checked it isn't needed in Scotland as there hasn't been a case in memory.

He admitted he had no real idea on immunology and had always simply followed manufacturers advice.

"That is very interesting that they do not need the same vaccine"  It may be actually safe to give a different brand of vaccine but you would need to check that a Vet is actually able to do this without going against advised recommendations.
