Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / 6 month pup with discharge

My 6month pup has a sort of sticky discharge and licks at her vulva a lot. I have been keeping a watching eye but it has been for a month or so.
I found a site which said this is common puppy vaginitis and antibiotics in this situation would be useless and that it would disappear when she reaches puberty. I have never experienced this with any of my girls and wondered whether anyone else had experienced this.
She has no other symptoms being a normal healthy naughty puppy.
So he could answer in his time, I have just emailed my vet and asked his opinion too. Obviously I will take her in if he thinks it necessary but puppy vaginitis is something I have never come across before.

Never actually seen it but had heard of it. Sounds as if you have done right thing

This could indeed be something called juvenile vaginitis.   It needs examining and diagnosing because it will pull her down (infection).   And it's comparatively simple to clear up - although it may need more than one antibiotic...... we had this in one of our young bitches.   Unfortunately it was stubborn and we had to have a swab, culture and I/D done before we got on top of the situation.   I don't understand 'antibiotics in this situation would be useless'......... it wasn't in the case of my bitch!    And rather than leave the situation to develop into something more serious (Pyometra) I got the infection, which it is, cleared up.

Have had a bit of this but the bitch came in season within a week of noticing it, and as you say it cleared up once she had the season an her vulva was adult size.

I have had this with my first bitch.

Took her to the vet who diagnosed vaginitis and gave antibiotics which cleared it up very quickly.  They certainly weren't useless.

Can't understand why you would leave it for a month, it could be a UTI which is also common in bitches of that age, as they often 'curtsey' very low whilst weeing.  UTI doesn't always present in a typical manner ;-)

My pug girl had this when she was young, in her case antibiotics did not help and in fact seemed to make the discharge thicker each time she was put on them. The vet suggested her first season might flush it out but that didn't work either and she had this problem on and off until she was spayed after her second season. She never seemed unwell and never had a UTI.

Thanks for all your posts. I just wondered whether anyone had heard of it which you obviously have.

Well I have a very experienced vet and he says

There is a condition of puppy vaginitis, which is a self limiting
problem, and does tend to go after their first season, or as they
mature. If she is well in all other ways, it would be OK to monitor, and
'wait and see'.

I will go with this for the time being unless it really does start to bother her or anything else changes.

My youngest (now 3½) had this as a puppy. I followed the same advice as your vet has given, and sure enough it did disappear when she had her first season (at almost 16 months!) and no problems since :)

I would say your vet is avoiding unnecessary antibiotic treatment for minor infections, as this then causes resistant bugs to proliferate.

Many GPs are adopting this policy these days as well, BUT for me, any infection going on is bound to be pulling her down so at the very least, I'd want infection cleared up.   Yes, it might correct itself with a first season, but what if it doesn't??   As I said, I had one with this and she was given antibiotics, the first course of which didn't work so we did a swab, culture and identification so the correct antibiotic could be given.   No way would I have gone for 'wait and see'.    She was a good quality bitch, destined for the ring and breeding - which she more than accomplished by coming with us back to the UK and taking a UK Championship.   Her maternal career might have been equally outstanding had her one and only litter not met with a vet who didn't do a C.Section when needed = 9 puppies, 5 died.   However, of the 4 survivors (note - not 'pick') 3 had their Stud Book numbers, one with a RBCC and the other with a BCC before being exported, behind my back, to Holland by the woman who I let have her and her brother (who also went to Holland).

Maybe had I'd just left her juv.vaginitis to 'resolve', none of this might have happened!!
