Not sure what you mean by reliable. Are you talking about giving an estimate of the number of puppies? She says on her website "Scans are carried out to confirm pregnancy only.  Exact numbers of puppies cannot be given or guaranteed."

Even an X-ray a week before whelping when you can count the sculls and spines will not be 100%. 

My friend imported a dog from the USA where the bitch was x-rayed and told five pups and 6 were born.

I have also been told by vet a bitch was empty and she passed a retained dead pup a day and a half after whelping.  the fact she was unsettled and constantly straining when going for a pee they put down to the uterus contracting and bumping on the bladder.

Thanks - On our first litter we had our girl scanned and they wouldn't say how many pups there were in case they were wrong. She went into labour ad had 5 pups and labour stopped. we thought that was it! before we could get to the vets for her check up she went back into labour and had 5 more, three of which were still born. If we had an idea of how many pups we would have got her to the vets immediately when the labour stopped.

I just wanted to be sure this time.
